My father is a very proud man and hard working man. He sent all 3 of his children to college and worked 3 jobs. He was so focused on his children that he failed to look after himself and plan for the future. He never set up a 401 K, Roth IRA, invested in stock or adequately saved his pay checks. All the money my father earned went to his kids future. Well this good intention has come back to bite his retirement years. He did not have medical insurance and was hit by an uninsured motorist. Since my father was an older man his recovery took a very long time with a lot of medical attention and practitioners. Needless to say he incurred a lot of debt and did not know how to cope with it. I have never seen my father so miserable and helpless not to control his own affairs. I saw a man who was in his late 60's who acted like he was in his 30;s turn into a feeble 90 year old man. We had an intervention with our father and suggested bankruptcy. He would have none of it. We explained to him that he would lose his house, car and work another 30 years to try to pay off the medical debt when it was not his fault for being hit by an uninsured motorist. I explained to him this is what bankruptcy is for. It is to protect those who have hard times fall on them with no mercy. I told him the accident wasn't his fault, you worked hard your whole life and the bankruptcy law was designed to help people like you who have given to society and family his whole life. Josh Hillan was particular helpful to my father and he was officially discharged in May of 2011. After everything was complete my father returned to his old self. He is out doing yard work, helping his neighbors, spending time with his grand children and living out the golden years of his life in happiness.
