Why Cheaper May Not Be Better - Selecting a Home Care Provider

Choosing Care for your Loved One   Selecting a caregiver is often one of the most difficult choices you may need to make for your ailing loved one. Home care is one of the best ways to help your senior loved one maintain their independence and increase their comfort level. Choosing non-medical in-home care also provides you with peace of mind, knowing that your loved one is safe and happy while you are away. Though you may know the types of service offered in the home care industry, it is important that you choose the best quality care possible for you and your beloved family member. At Synergy Homecare, we want you to know your options when it comes to home care. Between well- established home care companies and independent caregivers, you may wonder about the best care solution for you.  3 Types of Home Care In North Carolina, there are three types of home care available to you; each with its own benefits and drawbacks. You can choose from franchise home care providers, local home care providers and independent caregivers. Be sure to compare these types of home care to your needs before making a final choice. Franchise homecare provider- Owned and operated by a local resident who chooses to purchase the rights to use the name (brand) and processes associated with a larger company (franchisor). The franchise home care provider generally has the best operational processes and marketing literature because its corporate office spends their time and resources developing and finding processes that improve the overall efficiency of the business allowing them to optimize profitability and their chances for long term success.  Local (independent) home care provider- Owned and operated by local residents, but they own the brand and all the processes used to operate the business. These processes are often created from scratch and the owners of these businesses have to spend a significant amount of time and effort creating their own operating procedures, marketing literature, systems, training programs, and strategies. Ultimately their success is dependent on their ability to develop and run an efficient business. Independent Caregiver- Local individuals who may or may not have completed a Certified Nurse's Aide program (but not required) or other nursing program and often provide care to a small number of clients on an individual basis. They have to lowest cost structure as they do not have extensive operating costs associated with a home care agency and are not regulated by their state licensing agency. They often run a streamline operation and generally are paid directly and do not have liability insurance, systems, or marketing literature. Comparing Care This table will help you to see the differences between each type of home care.     Franchise Home Care Provider Local (Independent) Home Care Provider Independent Caregiver State License Must be licensed by the Department of Health and Human Services Must be licensed by the Department of Health and Human Services No licensing requirement CPR Required by law Required by law No requirement TB Testing Required by law Required by law No requirement RN overseeing all Personal Care Required by law Required by law No requirement Background Checks Required by law Required by law No requirement Reference Checks Required Required No requirement Bonded and Insured Required by law Required by law No requirement Workman Compensation Required Required No requirement Caregivers Employees Employees Independent Contractors Orientation Required by law Required by law No requirement Caregiver No-shows / Late Often use automated systems (i.e. Telephony) to track caregiver arrival. – Back-up caregivers are usually available in the case of sickness Counts on the client to notify them if a caregiver is late or no-shows – Back-up caregivers may be available in the case of sickness No back-up is usually available – Family must address directly with caregiver Billing Billing is usually generated on a weekly basis using a standardized process Billing is usually generated on a weekly basis As agreed upon with caregiver Quarterly Quality Reviews Required by law Required by law No requirement – Self monitored Cost Often competitive with local home care providers Often competitive with local franchise home care providers Often a few dollars cheaper than licensed home care providers Accept Medicaid Maybe Maybe No Accept Long Term Care Insurance Maybe Maybe No   Table 1 – Comparison of 3 Caregiver Options To ensure the consistent quality of home care services, all home care companies are held to state-wide requirements. These regulations protect families who use home care from negligent caregivers. While franchise home care providers and local home care providers are regulated and have a number of laws and regulations to follow, independent caregivers are not obligated to follow North Carolina regulations. Five Questions to Ask About HomeCare ·Will I be the main employer of this caregiver? (Will I be responsible for their taxes, insurance, business fees, worker's compensation, etc?) ·What if my caregiver does not show up for work? ·What happens if something goes missing from my home? Is my caregiver insured or bonded? ·Is my caregiver supervised by a Registered Nurse or someone who oversees care 24 hours a day and is available to answer questions and address complaints? ·What do I do when I do not like my caregiver? How complicated is the caregiver screening and selection process? You deserve reliable, high-quality care that attends to your every need. At Synergy HomeCare, we want to make sure that you are well cared for, no matter what type of care you choose. Carefully evaluate each care option, and choose the company or caregiver that best fits you and your care requirements.  Contact Jamie Canelas Owner / President Synergy HomeCare of the Triangle 8801 Fast Park Dr. Suite 211 Raleigh, NC 27617 (919) 786-5052 canelasj@shctriangle.com ...read more
