Alternatives to Spraying Trees

Many people don’t like tospray treesfor insects or diseases because of the cost and the potential danger from pesticides and fungicides. Fortunately there are some alternatives to these practices which are cheaper and safer.  Insecticide Injections An excellent alternative that does not involve costly spraying is an insecticide injection. Instead of spraying an insecticide a person administers this chemical by injecting directly into thetreemuch as a doctor gives a person a vaccination. To penetrate the tree, a person using this method will have to drill a hole in it. This is a good preventive measure and it could be more cost effective for landowners with just a few trees. You should be able to find this kind of insecticide for sale online or at hardware stores and garden centers. Something to be aware of is that this kind of treatment is only effective early in the growing season, usually the spring. Trenching An excellent means of preventing the spread of fungal infections is trenching. In this technique a trench is dug around a tree that has been infected to cut off its roots. Most funguses spread through the roots so cutting them can contain the infection. You will have to dig down about three or four feet but it can be effective. Hose Root Feeders Some treatments can also be administered by hose root feeders. These are devices designed to take water directly to the roots of a tree. They are fairly simple devices that contain a stake that is attached to a hose through which water pushes chemicals or fertilizer. This method can get treatments directly to the roots of the tree. It’s a really good means of applying fertilizer and some fungicides. These treatments will be available at hardware stores, garden centers and online. Biological Pest Control A final means of controlling destructive bugs without chemicals is biological pest control. It usually means putting other insects that eat pests on the trees. It can work well against some pests such as aphids but is not always effective. It won’t work against funguses and many of the more destructive pests such as pine beetles. Some biological pest control insects including ladybugs and praying mantises are available at some hardware stores and online. Drenching There are also some insecticides and fungicides that you can pour directly on the ground around the tree about once a year usually early in the growing season. This does work but it can create a mess and it can be washed away by rain. It may not stop the spread of flying pests such as the Emerald Ash Borer. ...read more

Beech Bark Disease

Beech Bark Disease has been considered the "oldest ‘new' threat" to American Beech trees in the United States. Though the disease occurred in isolated incidents as early and the 1930s, the disease has spread to parts of the Northeast, the Midwest and as far south as Tennessee andNorth Carolina.  Beech Bark disease is a fungal infection that attacks beech trees when they become host to an insect called the beech scale.  As the beech scale feeds on the tree's inner sapwood, it leaves openings for fungal bacteria to enter, causing deadly damage to the tree.  Many times cankers appear on the surface of the tree as a way to wall off the spread of the infection.  These cankers leave trees severely deformed and are only somewhat effective in fighting off the diseases, leading to the eventual death of the entire tree. How To Spot Beech Bark Disease Because the beech scales tunnel under the bark, spotting them is virtually impossible.A good way to know whether beech scales are feeding on your trees is to look for the appearance of a white wax-like substance that covers the bark of the tree.  The beech scales excrete this coating to protect the young larvae.   Another sign to look for is the appearance of cankers or round scabs that form on the surface of the tree.  This indicates that a fungal infection is present and the tree is trying to contain the infection.  At this point the leaves will turn yellow and fall.  If that occurs out of season, it's a strong sign that the tree is dying. Controlling Beech Bark Disease Beech bark disease is a powerful disease that is hard to correct, however there are few steps to take to control the disease and even prevent it from occurring.  Tree spraying is thought to be effective against most tree insects, however, the beech scales burrow so deeply into the tree that most insecticides are unable to kill them.  However, if spraying occurs early on or when the beech scales emerge from the wax coating, they can be sprayed enough to control the spread of the disease.  Tree spraying in this fashion will have to occur annually to keep the tree intact, but will not completely eliminate the beech scales or the disease. Seek professional help from atree serviceexpert to determine if tree spraying is necessary and what kind of spray is effective against beech bark disease.  They be able to recommend pruning some of the deformed portions of the tree or even suggest removing the whole tree.  Removing an infected tree and properly burning or disposing of it can stall or halt the spread of the disease to any other trees in the area. ...read more
