I'll tell you what. I LOVE making cakes!! I love the chance to make something that people just love, that take them back to days past, to times in their lives when happiness was at it's best!!! And if one little bite of something I created can do that, then why NOT??? In addition, I like being able to make something BEAUTIFUL. When I start mixing my icing, and seeing come together when moments before, it was just a blob of butter...then sugar...it starts fluffing up, and it's like a cloud. Then I add my color in, it is like...being an artist. There is nothing like having full reign when making a cake for someone, they tell me what they like, what colors they have in mind-and from there, "do what you want!" 100% trust in ME to create for them something that they love, and they didn't even think about it! My dad's birthday was last month. He didn't once, not ONCE ask me for a cake-or tell me what he would like to have, and my dad makes no bones about telling me what he wants. Never thought about it? Probably not. After all, I wasn't just making him a cake, or even just DECORATING a cake, I was throwing him the biggest party he'd ever had, outside of when he got married. Except this time, no one had to share the spotlight. He was turning 70, and I thought that anyone turning 70 years old and looking as good as he did, and doing the things he likes to do-darn it, he needed to celebrate! One of his favorite things, he's done for years, is ride his motorcycle. He has a beautiful 2002 Honda Gold Wing. So I made a Gold Wing Cake. The day of his party, I took it to his house, and I showed it to him...when he smiled that great big smile and said, 'You made my Gold Wing!" I knew I'd made him HAPPY!!! (NOT that he wasn't...for heaven's sake, I was throwing him a party!) What a great thrill. It's a lot of work to make, bake, and decorate. Many hours of work involved in shopping, designing, mixing, baking, mixing some more, decorating..and the clean up!! Sometimes, it takes a few days. So if you think that you are may be paying too much for "just a cake", no matter how great you think it is, just remember how hard your decorator worked!!! Not to mention, the gas (for shopping) the investment in the equipment, the ingredients-it becomes costly, as well. But I love doing it, and hope that I'll be able to this for a long time!
