The adage "Can't see the forest for the trees" is an interesting contrast for businesses trying to maintain high visibility and brand awareness in an extremely competitive economy. In our current economic recovery, making sure you are the tree that stands out can be the difference between success, survival, or closed doors. When you are a new organization or move to a new location, you become something new on the landscape and stand out to traffic flowing by your location. However as time passes by, your business and logo start to blend in with other organizations nearby until you become part of the landscape (or "forest") and your potential customers pass by without taking notice. To prevent this slip into lethargy, you'll want to take steps to stand out from the rest. An extensive advertising budget can easily solve this dilemma, but most businesses to not have that luxury. To combat indifference, we need to get creative and find inexpensive ways to drastically and subtlely stand out from the competition. For example, a restaurant in Charlotte has a large double-side pylon sign withboth sign faces upside down. While it is somewhat difficult to read the sign, it almost certainly catches the attention of the passing traffic and creates a lasting memory. Many more options such as changes in color, wording, or message order can provide the subtle changes necessary to catch the eye.
