Preventing the Spread of Tree Killing Insects

Tree-killing insects like the Pine Beetle, the Emerald Ash Borer and the Spruce Budworm have become a major problem in North America. Every year hundreds of thousands of trees are killed by these pests. This means that every property owner who has trees or woods on his or her land needs to be on the look out for these pests. The only way to keep trees from these pests is to take aggressive action when they first appear.  The first action a property owner needs to take is to learn which pests are active in his area. Some pests like the Pine Beetle are confined to a particular region. Others like the Emerald Ash Borer are spreading quickly over the country. To make matters worse many pests are coming into the US and Canada all the time. These unwelcome visitors can spread fast so homeowners have to be on the look out for them. A good first step in fighting the bugs is to find out which insects are active in your area. The US Forest Service, state and provincial forestry agencies and universities can tell you which bugs are around and how to control them. Other steps property owners can take to protect trees include: •    Get a regular visit from a professional tree service. The employees of such a business are expert at spotting and controlling infestations. •    Regularly inspect trees for signs of infestation. These include holes bored in bark and sap running from trees. •    Cut down dead or dying trees as soon as you notice them. •    Dispose of wood from infested trees as soon as possible. The longer it stays on your property the greater the risk the bugs will spread. •    Don't cut or buy firewood from areas infested with tree-killing insects.  •    Spray or treat firewood from infected trees or areas with infestations with an insecticide when you bring it on your property. •    Have your trees sprayed with insecticides as soon as you notice the signs of an infestation.   ...read more

Top Five Trees From Myth & Legend

Trees have appeared in myths, legends and fairytales since the tradition of storytelling began. Though there are trees mentioned in hundreds of children's stories, some are more significant and memorable than others.  Here are the top five most famous trees that have appeared in fiction. 1. The Magic Faraway Tree Author, Enid Blyton, is most famous for her well-loved children's stories about splendid adventures in the Enchanted Wood.  This enchanted forest featured the Magical Faraway Tree. Colorful characters like Silkie the Fairy and Moonface inhabited the tree, which grew a strange selection of fruits at different times of the day. The heroes of the tale climbed to the top of the tree to visit strange lands and were involved in many memorable escapades. The Faraway Tree series consists of four books: The Enchanted Wood, The Magical Faraway Tree, The Folk Of The Faraway Tree and Up The Faraway Tree. 2. Spaghetti Trees The invention of Spaghetti Trees was an April Fools' Day joke, which was broadcast in 1957 on famously fact-based BBC show, Panorama. The hoax was highly successful, coming at a time when few people had eaten or heard of spaghetti.  Many viewers believed the tall tale so much so that they contacted the television network to ask how to grow their own spaghetti tree. 3. Old Man Willow  J.R.R Tolkein's Old Man Willow appears in the book The Fellowship of The Ring. Old Man Willow uses his magical abilities to entrap the protagonists of the story called the hobbits. Also known as the Great Willow, Old Man Willow has an evil nature and the sinister appearance of a gnarled grey willow tree. 4. Yggdrasil, The World Tree In Norse mythology, Yggdrasil is an enormous ash tree. Yggdrasil is generally translated to mean Odin's Horse. The great ash tree is the center of ancient Scandinavian cosmology acting as the solar plexus of the nine worlds surrounding it. This mysterious tree has been the muse of many creative types over the years, showing its influence in poetry, paintings and carvings. Famed mystery writer, Agatha Christie, even used the name Ygdrasil for a tree in her novel The Hollow. 5. Robin Hood's Tree Robin Hood is one of the most popular characters from English folk tales, who was said to rob from the rich and give to the poor. In some versions of the Robin Hood story, the outlaw and his group of bandits lived in Sherwood Forest near Nottingham, England. Tourists travelling in the area can visit an ancient oak tree known as the Major Oak, which locals say served as a hideout for Robin Hood and his followers.  Even without the legends of Robin Hood, the Major Oak is rather special and has been named as one of the Great British Trees by Queen Elizabeth II. ...read more
