Does filing your tax return remind you of the movie Groundhog Day?

Every year February 2nd is celebrated as Groundhog day in Pennsylvania and perhaps a few other places. According to common folklore the groundhog helps predict if summer will be here soon or late! Yeah, and we thought only India was the land of mysterious traditions, snake charmers and elephants! I wasn't much familiar with this tradition until I watched one of the classic movie Groundhog Day from the 90s. In the movie, TV weatherman Phil Connors is forced to live the same day over and over again until he gains some karmic insights into his life and makes some dramatic and sometimes comic changes to his life. If you haven't watched the movie, it may be well worth your time.Does filing your tax return each year seems just like reliving the same day over and over again each year? You go through the same desperate effort to locate all the relevant documents, put together the package and enter all the data on your computer, wait in anticipation as the hour glass on your computer screen turns and as the results show up on the next screen you keep your fingers crossed to see a bigger tax refund than last year...sounds familiar? Well, if that sounds familiar to you then maybe you need to change your karmic balance this year.Try something different this year to get out of the Groundhog syndrome. One option is to dump all the tax paperwork at an accountant's office and go do something that you are passionate about. Perhaps learn how to dance or ice sculpting or play that musical instrument you have been thinking about mastering. Maybe the karmic changes will lead you to a better life supported by a bigger tax refund. There are more than a thousand pages of IRS code that speak to hundreds of deductions for taxpayers. Your accountant is a professional and trained in uncovering these deductions for every tax situation.Try working with a tax accountant this year and see if it helps breaks the groundhog day routine for you for the rest of your life. ...read more

Multi-state Tax Returns

Did you know that on average Americans move at least three to four times in their life time? There is probably no other country where people move around so much for school, job or just for fun. By the way relocation is also one of the three most stressful events that one faces. The other two being loosing a loved one and loosing one's job. Now if you have relocated in the last year, you probably have to file for more than one state tax return. Filing Federal tax return in this situation is pretty simple. However filing multiple state tax returns is definitely tricky. Especially if you have had tax deducted in both the sates and are claiming refund. The trick here is to file state return as part-year resident. Most software programs cannot handle this situation very well. You will need an experienced CPA in Charlotte to help you with Multistate tax Returns. Another situation with Multi-state tax returns may be if you are working in one state and living in another state. In this scenario you have to file one of the state returns as a non-resident. This is where it becomes complicated and it is better to call the your local CPA. ...read more

IRS Tax Return E-filing to begin

Last year the US witnessed the shut down of the government for several days. Although at first it didn't seem like it was affecting the citizens in particular, the effects of that shut down are being felt now in January of 2014. Due to the government shut down last faa, the IRS was unable to ready its systems to accept e-file tax returns early in January. The start date was delayed until the very end of January. Charlotte tax return preparers have been trying to help their clients file paper returns this month in the hope that the tax payers will receive an early tax refund. Finally next week, the IRS will begin to accept E-file Tax Returns. This should help the tax payers get their returns completed and hopefully see their tax refund checks in the mail. This seems to have had an effect on some retail stores as well this year as sales have dried up in January. Retailers are hoping that once the consumers receive their tax refund they should see some spending surge. Filing tax returns online has made it very easy for tax payers to claim their tax refund, although for everything to work smoothly, the IRS has to update its systems each year with new laws that may have been enacted. This takes some time and effort. Keeping the government shut does hurt us in the long run, although it may seem like fun in the short term. Hopefully you will claim your refund next week and have enough refund to pay off your credit cards from the holiday shopping last year and take your valentine for a lovely date on the 14th of February. ...read more
