Danny's crew were very quick to install the pool but D's communication was terrible. He installed pump in the incorrect location, claimed he was installing "top of the line" equipment & didnt, & practically refused to do an itemized contract but my husband insisted before final payment. He installed a pump that was not the pump he represented in the literature he mailed to us. I am SO GLAD we had an itemized contract bc salt water generator (Intex) Danny installed wouldn't work. It was constantly showing an error message so my husband did research & found it was the incorrect model for our size/type pool. D would not return phone calls/texts and kept giving us the run around. We kept records of all communication with D. He cursed him and made very demeaning statements like "you must be unemployed to need to harass the **** out of someone like me to get a little money." We found 2 recent BBB complaints & the review below. ...read more

We had our pool put in 8 months ago. Our vermiculite isn't hard. Feels horrible when walking in. And to beat all our concrete has sunk, not cracked, sunk 2 inches. It is pulling on the frame and our liner. We call Danny and not only does he deny its his fault despite the warranty...but he cusses my husband. He has zero business skills and no tact. I regret using this company and wish I could undo this!!!! I will never ever recommend this dude to anyone else. ...read more

Fun Facts about Frogs

For pond owners, the sounds of spring go far beyond the song of birds and the chorus of crickets. As you crack open your windows to let the soft breezes ruffle your curtains and freshen your interior spaces, you’re greeted by the happy croaks of froggy friends. Like the Pied Piper, they lure you outside to set a spell and escape from the hustle and bustle of the world. Frogs provide great enjoyment, for young and old alike. Kids squeal with delight when they step too closely and are startled by the jump of a frog by their feet. Grown-ups remember youthful days of searching for frogs as they listen to their harmonious melody. The next time you relax by your pond with friends and family enjoy the chorale of croaking frogs, you can wow them with some fun froggy facts: A group of frogs is called an “army.” A group of toads is called a “knot.” The world’s largest frog is the Goliath, growing up to 15 inches and weighing up to 7 pounds. Frogs can lay up to as many as 4,000 eggs during spawning season. Some frogs can jump up to 20 times their body length in a single leap. Some frogs have tongues 10 times the length of their bodies. A fear of frogs is called ranidaphobia. Frogs don’t drink water through their mouth; they drink it through their skin. In most species, only the male frogs croak. Croaking attracts the females and warns other male frogs of territorial boundaries. Not all frogs croak. Some chirp like a bird and some whistle. Frogs shed their skin about once a week. After pulling off the old dead skin, the frog will eat it. The glass frog has translucent skin, so you can see its organs and bones. You can even watch its heart beating! Most frogs have teeth on the upper jaw, used to hold its prey in place. Evidence shows that frogs have roamed the Earth for over 200 million years. Frogs were the first land animals with vocal chords. Frogs are unable to live in the sea or salt water. Some frogs are tadpoles for just 8 days, while bullfrogs remain tadpoles for about 2 years! In Japan, frogs are a symbol of good luck. In Egypt, frogs were a symbol of resurrection and were often mummified with the dead. Contrary to popular belief, you cannot get warts from frogs or toads. No matter how many times you kiss a frog, he won’t turn into a prince. One final fun fact for you froggy lovers out there. Did you know that May 13th is Frog Jumping Day? It’s true! Frog Jumping Day can be traced back to Mark Twain and his first short story, “Jim Smiley and His Jumping Frog.” What will you do to celebrate Frog Jumping Day on May 13th? Give Your Charlotte Pond a New Look with Aquatic Plants

Ask any homeowner which room they’d like to upgrade most in their house and they’ll jump to answer “the kitchen!” or “the bathroom!”  When rooms aren’t freshened with a coat of paint or updated with a new dishwasher or plumbing fixtures, they start to look tired and outdated. It can be the same for your water garden. Sure, that yellow waterlily looks beautiful year after year, but you might find yourself wanting to add a bit more visual interest. Perhaps the easiest way to lend more pop to your pond is by adding aquatic plants. You can use a few interior design principles to assist in giving your pond a plant makeover. Mix TexturesA variety of plant textures creates visual interest in your water garden. Frothy parrots feather contrasts nicely against spiky, architectural sweetflag. When you’re at the water gardening store, set two plants next to each other and see if you find the pairing pleasing to your eye. You can even turn a critical eye to terrestrial plants. Container gardens are highly popular, and it might help to look at some of the nursery’s plant combinations before choosing your aquatic plants. For example, the velvety, rounded leaf of a geranium is often paired with a taller spiky plant and a dainty trailing plant. Use this same design concept for the water garden. The Tall and Short of ItInterior designers always combine a variety of furniture heights in a room in order to avoid monotony. Likewise, you want the eye to travel around your pond, exploring hills and valleys that you create with plants. An expanse of water lettuce bobbing on the pond’s surface draws the eye toward a stately hibiscus. When placing plants in and around the pond, be sure to position shorter plants in front of taller ones. Otherwise, the view of the short plant is blocked. Considering the Color WheelWhen it comes to flowering plants, quite often you’ll choose your favorite colors. But if yellow is your favorite, your pond might look a little ho-hum with yellow waterlilies, marsh marigold, and yellow snowflake. By adding purple, directly opposite of yellow on the color wheel, you’ve just created colorful drama in your pond. Consider too, the surrounding colors of the landscape and house. Why not choose a color or two from terrestrial plants (or even the trim colors on your home) and bring them into your pond to tie the entire landscape together? Focal PointsSeasoned designers know the importance of providing a focal point, a place where the eye can rest for a moment. In a dining room, it might be an elegant china cabinet. In your pond, it might be a grand lotus or colorful grouping of waterlilies. The focal point must be impressive enough to captivate the eye and invite it to linger awhile. Some type of flowering plant is always a good choice! Real Life InspirationIf you’re like most people and need to see things put together before deciding if they’ll look good, then simply turn to visual sources to help you choose plants for your pond. A water gardening magazine or website will have photos to peruse for ideas on plant combinations. Attending a local pond tour provides first-hand opportunity to see plants together in a pond. You’ll also benefit from asking the homeowner for information about the performance of the plants in their pond. Have FunThe great thing about plants is, if you decide you don’t like the way they look, you can always move them! So have fun and experiment with color and placement. Be brave and try some new aquatic plants, too. Water gardening should be enjoyable, so no need to be a perfectionist when designing your pond plant layout. Remember the overarching principle when it comes to design … “Rules are made to be broken!” For more information on aquatic plants or pond installation and maintenance, call Waterscapes Pro at 704-365-6700 or log ontowww.waterscapespro.com. ...read more

Create a Mini Pond with an Easy and Economical Container Water Garden

Lawnmowers are being hauled out of garden sheds and garages all over Charlotte now that the grass is stretching toward the spring sky. As a pond owner, you might find yourself smirking over the fact that your water garden means you have less grass to mow than your neighbor. As you admire your pond, you might surprisingly find yourself wishing you had more water features dotting your garden, but want something small and easy to create. Container water gardens allow you to add refreshing pockets of water throughout your garden spaces. A container water garden can be created from any water-tight vessel you have hiding in your shed or garage. If you rummage around a bit, you might find just the perfect, rustic galvanized tub that was long forgotten (just be sure to check it for holes). Or you may even run across an old Coca-Cola cooler that could easily be transformed into a quirky yet charming container water garden. As you look around your yard, you might even be tempted to turn that beautiful ceramic pot into a small “pond” where water lettuce bob playfully on the surface while butterflies stop by for a refreshing drink. You’ll find a variety of colors, shapes, and sizes when searching for vessels designed specifically for container water gardening. Likewise you can turn any soil containers into water gardens by plugging the drainage hole and coating the interior surface with a waterproof sealer. Once you have your pot selected and have ensured that it’s water-tight, it’s time to consider a little filtration. Aquatic plants are the most natural way to add filtration to your container water garden. Water lettuce or aquatic hyacinth will dangle their roots into the cool water, soaking up excess nutrients. Potted aquatic plants can be easily submerged into a container, much the same way you place them into your pond. Simply follow the garden center’s instructions for the proper depth needed for each plant. If you find that your container is deeper than the recommended planting depth, you can place a few bricks into the container and set your potted aquatic plant on top. It’s that easy! And don’t be afraid to try your hand at growing a waterlily in a container. The cheery ‘Helvola’ waterlily is perfect for container water gardens. Its petite leaves and sunny yellow lilies make it a delight, not to mention it’s super easy to grow! Additional filtration and aeration can be added with a spitter or small fountain. Many garden centers carry small fountain pumps with a variety of fountain heads. Simply choose the fountain head of your choice for the look you want to create. You can even change the fountain head throughout the season for added variety. By keeping the waters moving, you also eliminate the chance for mosquito larvae since mosquitoes won’t lay eggs in moving water. If you’re like most pond owners who don’t think a water garden is complete without fish, consider adding a couple of Rosy Reds to your container. Not only will the fish eat mosquito larvae (if you’re not using a small fountain), but they’ll provide a pop of color to enjoy. Before adding fish, make sure to first treat the water with a pond detoxifier if you’re using municipal water. Your options for container water gardening are quite limitless. Vessels come in a variety of shapes, colors, and sizes and can easily be placed anywhere in the yard. Add one by the front door to greet your visitors. Tuck one into a small corner of a perennial garden for added interest or to attract birds and butterflies. You can even place one on your deck or patio close to your pond. Whether you choose to recycle something resurrected from your shed, or opt to purchase a new container designed for container water gardening, you’ll enjoy the beauty that a small “pond” brings to your outdoor living space. Add a whimsical fountain or spitter and you’ll experience the soothing sound of running water, as well. Container water gardens are perfect, too, for people who want to dabble a bit with water gardening before taking the plunge with a full, ecosystem pond.
