Previous reports do not make clear the depth of misconduct by Astronomical Tours. Their antics impacted three separate travel groups totaling more than 120 people who went to Tahiti to see the 2010 total solar eclipse. Most booked more than a year in advance and paid several thousand dollars each. All were subjected to mid-trip demands for more money by the company owner, all had to pay hotels directly for nights that were supposed to be paid by her, and most were outraged by her mismanagement. Apart from financial issues, travelers struggled to get basic information, like transfer times. Some travelers won't forget the owner telling her clients that dealing with them was "like herding cats." Accounts appear on a Sky & Telescope blog: www.skyandtelescope.com/community/skyblog/observingblog/98223754.html?pageSize=0 The Better Business Bureau gives Astronomical Tours a rating of "F" for unanswered complaints. They are collecting deposits now for tours in 2011 and 2012. Buyer beware! ...read more

The best I can say about Jen Winter and Astronomical Tours is that the site from which we saw the eclipse was great. Arrival in Papeete was chaotic: Our names hadn't been given to the transfer company. AT didn't pay our hotel in Bora Bora for a $2400 add-on we had bought from AT. If we had gone, we'd have had to pay twice! After the eclipse, Jen Winter told us that cost over-runs required our "voluntarily" giving her an additional $200 per person. The rationale given was that the cost of transfers (eight bus, two ferries) exceeded our hotel costs! Pure B.S. I had to collar Jen Winter as she was headed home to get her to pay our hotel for the two extra days we had already paid her for. Although we had pre-paid for our entire trip, she withheld payment of $400 to our hotel, forcing us to pay it. I just got an email from AT saying that if I didn't pay $400, I'd lose my place on the trip!! Absolutely insane. Avoid AT like the plague! ...read more

This company is the epitome of poor busines management. Midway through a 6-nite eclipse tour in the South Pacific, the owner claimed that she needed an additional $200 per person--preferably in cash--to cover transfers and interisland transport because she did not have the funds to pay the vendors. All of us had invoices showing that we had paid in full for the package (which included room, breakfast, and all transfers). The paperwork included no clauses indicating that cost might change following final payment. On checking out of the final hotel, we found that the owner had not even paid the hotel bill. Since MO's statutes require that travel companies have "liquid assets of at least $250,000 in the form of one or more certificates of deposit or a letter of credit," AT is not only poorly run, but in violation of the law. Avoid them at all costs. ...read more
