What Kind of Trees Do You Have?

Learning what kind oftreesyou have on your property is important. Knowing which species you are dealing with can tell you have to care for your greenery, keep it healthy and prevent the spread of tree-killing pests.   Some popular American species of trees:   Ash – This a large and leafy popular that looks sort of like a maple. It is a hardwood and it is very common in the Midwest and parts of the East. In recent years this species has fallen prey to an extremely destructive pest called the Emerald Ash Borer. There are over 65 varieties of this species found in the US and Canada. They are prized for shade and adding beauty particularly to rural properties.   Douglas Fir – a large spruce found in the West, it is valued for its appearance. It is dark blue and is often planted for ornamental purposes in the Rocky Mountain region. It needs moist wet soil and it can be susceptible to the Spruce Budworm.   Sycamore – this is the biggest tree found in the Eastern US. It is valued as a shade tree because it is fast growing and long lived. It should not be planted in smaller yards or near buildings or power lines because of the potential size. In recent years large numbers of Sycamores have been killed by the fungal infection Anthracnose.   Hickory– a hardwood with edible nuts. It is a hardwood that does not require much care. Found in the Eastern US.   LondonPlanetree – a big and leafy poplar similar to a sycamore. Widely planted as a replacement for sycamores killed by fungus. It should only be planted in areas where it can grow to a big size.   Chestnut – these only exist in a few places because the variety was effectively wiped out by disease in the 20 Century. Some efforts are being made to restore it.   Golden Rain – a large ornamental tree with gold colored flowers and fruit. It is best for urban areas and is common in many yards.   If you are unsure what trees you have on your property it is best to consult a professional. Anarboristcan tell you which species you are dealing with. So can the experts from extension services and the Forest Service.   ...read more

Cyanobacteria in Tree Mosses Important in Forest Life

Biological researchers say that cyanobacteria that live in mosses found in tree branches help in the cycle of life in forests, thus making trees more abundant with other life forms. These bacteria are very good in providing nitrogen rather than those that are found on the ground. Large ancient trees actually carry this type of moss and they are responsible in helping life in the forest grow. The maintenance of large old trees in coastal temperate forests that are found in Southern Alaska up to Northern California is very important. The interaction of old trees, cyanobacteria and mosses contribute to the vitality that keep the long-term productivity of these existing forests. Large old trees are not only ripe for cutting but they are actually important in maintaining the overall lifecycle in rainforests. They provide habitat for something that needs habitat and so on. Each habitat or creature fertilizes one thing and that one fertilizes another. It’s creating a domino effect on the forest trees which is a good thing. Once you eliminate the primary source the entire forest ecosystem will fall out of place. The key players in the cycle of life in the forest are actually large old trees, mosses that are found on their branches and bacteria called cyanobacteria that grow on the mosses. The cyanobacteria take in nitrogen from the atmosphere and makes sure that this nitrogen becomes available for plants to consume. This process is also known as nitrogen fixation which can be only done by a handful of organisms. Development of forests is determined by the amount of nitrogen that is available. Cyanobacteria that are in mosses found on the ground are the ones believed to supply nitrogen. The study of these bacteria weren’t examined in the past on coastal forests or in tree tops. The recent findings that the cyanobacteria are more numerous on canopies is a breakthrough that will help people who maintain the forest to grow more abundant. The amount of nitrogen depends on the amount of moss that a tree can have. The tree should first age enough to start forming mosses before the cyanobacteria will start showing up. Trees don’t start having mosses until they reach a hundred years of life. More mosses are found accumulating on much older trees giving life to the other trees in their surroundings. ...read more
