June 16th, 2006 Southern Exposure We were recently given a copy of the March 2006 issue of Southern Living Magazine, which featured several of our Cloche Pots on the cover. Naturally, we were delighted to see our flower pots being used very creatively, and were amazed that in our container gardening adventures we had never seen flower pots planted in nested layers quite like this. Although the planting shown in the photo is designed for early spring, the concept could be easily modified to accommodate summer flowers. Following are the slightly modified step-by-step instructions for creating this very cool look: This project uses three different sizes of planters; our 15.25” diameter Cloche Pot, the 11.75” diameter Cloche Pot, and the 7” diameter Cloche Pot. 1) Center an inverted terra cotta flower pot (or a piece of 3” diameter PVC piping) inside of the 15.25” diameter Cloche Pot. Essentially, this will act as a pedestal for the 11.75” Cloche Pot. The support should reach to about 1 inch below the rim of the largest pot (it should be about 9.5” tall). If you are using terra cotta flower pots as the support, you can nest several of them on top of one another until you reach the correct height. 2) Fill the 15.25” diameter Cloche Pot with moist potting soil, packing it around the centered pedestal. 3) Fill the 11.75” Cloche Pot with moist potting soil, and plant this flower pot with gerbera, vinca, impatiens, or your favorite summer flower. 4) Sprinkle wheatgrass seed around the base of the upper Cloche Pot. Cover them with an additional ¼” of potting soil and water them lightly. If you want additional variety in this layer of the display, feel free to add wildflower seeds to this layer as well. 5) Fill the smallest planter with potting soil and plant flowers to match those in the upper Cloche Pot. This will help to carry the colors of the flower through the entire grouping. 6) Position the planters in a corner of your garden which receives suitable light for the flowers you’ve chosen. If you chose an area on a patio or deck, we recommend using pot feet under the largest planter to promote air circulation and drainage. A few years ago, while flipping through a copy ofArchitectural Digest, we noticed a glazed flowerpot with hand-carved decorations in the background of a photo. As we were immediately impressed with its crisp form and elegant beauty, we ripped the photo from the magazine and tacked it to the door of the refrigerator under a magnet from a Chinese carry-out place. We began to search our local garden centers for pots with a similar look. We found lots of flower pots,but nothing like the pot in the photo. We checked hardware stores, national retailers, and nurseries, and kept coming up dry. We learned a lot about flower pots in the process (probably more than anyone ever needs to know), and took our search online. After months of hunting, we were still empty-handed, and the photo still hung on our refrigeratordoor -- taunting us every time we reached for the baloney. Finally, our online treasure hunt paid off, as we found River Market Pottery, the manufacturer and importer of these pots. They directed us to a retailer in our region which had recently begun to carry their products, and although we didn't find the exact pot that inspired our search, we found several others which immediately became permanent additions to our yard. We were blown away with the depth and intricacies of the decorations. The craftsmanship was miles beyond anything we had found during our quest – each pot was really an individual work of art, with its own personality and mood. The pots really brought a new dimension to the shrubs and flowers we planted in them, as though we were combining two beautiful things together to form one, greater beautiful unit. As the seasons rolled on, we became even more impressed with our pots. During the fire and brimstone temperatures of the Midwestern summer the glazes neither faded nor cracked. During that especially wet fall, our pots remained sturdy and intact as we headed for winter. After taking just a fewsimple precautions to freeze-proof the pots, we swallowed hard and left our pots to face the cold, ice, and snow on their own. We were amazed that the manufacturer’s promises held true—the pots survived without damage!
