Film, Video, and Audio Archiving - preserving memories for generations

For the past 11 years, I have been helping customers create, produce, and distribute content onto various forms of media.  Since the inception of the digital disk (DVD & CD) I have seen a movement to preserve older media formats like 8mm film, VHS tape, 35mm slides, and audio tape to more reliable formats like Digital Video Disk (DVD) or Compact Disk (CD). Probably the most beneficial part to archiving film, video and audio is the stability of digital media insuring preservation of your memories for the forseeable future.  The "changing over" from one medium to another has allowed different generations to enjoy the memories of yesterday without the worry of "snapping the film in the projector" or "the VCR player eating the tape". It also elimates further degradation or loss of quality of the film or tape media.  Over time products like film, video and audio tape degrade and the loss of image and audio can break down to where there is literally nothing left to view or hear.  Thankfully, with the aid of software enhancements, some of the loss can be reversed. If you have older film or tape, or you know of someone who does, the best thing to do is to get it transferred as soon as possible to a DVD or CD.No matter your age, archiving your film, video, or audio tape will preserve memories for generations to come.  Grandparents often archive with the purpose of leaving behind their legacy to their family. Younger generations may have been left a box of old film reels or tapes, linking them to the only memories of their loved-ones.  Most often the memories are priceless and they deserve the proper attention and care for preservation.Archiving is relatively inexpensive and less involved than you might think.  What's more?  The cost to make (duplicate) copies is even more affordable especially when all family members can enjoy it alike.  No more fighting over who gets the family films or VHS tapes... Now everyone can get a well preserved copy on DVD or CD!  The end result is a fun and often rewarding experience for all those involved in the preservation of your material. What I find most rewarding about digital archiving are the comments from those who haven't played the film or video for years but now have a lasting memory etched on a DVD or CD to play at their leisure.  I often hear people say that they are so glad they archived the material.  Once a person is grown up or deceased, memories become priceless!-Nathan KeechMedia Specialist, Keech Media, LLC ...read more
