Addiction Treatment Options
These days you hear people say that they are addicted to things like chocolate, shopping and even their smartphones. Most people wouldn’t jump to candy and technology when it comes to addiction, rather its drugs and alcohol that come to mind. Addiction is an interesting term to think about because there are so many things that it can define. Doug Sellman, who works at the National Addiction Center, defines addiction as compulsive behavior stemming from the subconscious mind. Addiction is often associated with those who suffer from psychological aliments like obsessive compulsive disorder. People with OCD are addicted to certain behaviors like hand washing, counting things and a whole number of quirky actions. In order to delineate between addictions such as drugs and alcohol from those who suffer from OCD, another definition was created.Drug addiction is the repeated consumption of a drug and the overpowering desire or need to continue the behavior. Substitute the word drug for alcohol and it still works perfectly. In order to treat addiction, it’s helpful to know as much about drugs and alcohol as possible. That’s why scientists created a chart of addiction potential for all the major drugs. Heroin took the top spot, but it was followed closely by cocaine and then alcohol in the number three spot. The list was controversial however, as it did not include caffeine, which is widely considered to be a stimulant with addictive properties. The list includes both uppers and downers, as both categories produce addictive substances. In order to combat drug addiction, numerous treatment center programs have been created. Alcoholics Anonymous, also called AA, is one of the longest running and most effective treatment programs ever designed. AA follows a very strict 12-step process, that when followed exactly, will help a person overcome their addiction to alcohol. The steps in Alcoholics Anonymous are very much centered on religion as guide for people to reach sobriety. Many who complete AA consider it to be a spiritual awakening. That’s partly because the twelve steps are aimed at the four major areas of health; physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. AA is also characterized by its use of sponsors, who are fellow AA members assigned to be a support system for each other. Some of the twelve steps even require participation by an addict’s sponsor. If you or someone you know as tried to kick a substance abuse habit in the past but was unsuccessful, contact the addiction treatment specialists at the Christian Alcoholism Helpline in Woodbury, MN as soon as you can. The trained staff is professional, knowledgeable and willing to help anyone who is serious about making a positive change in their lifestyle. ...read more

Stress and Substance Abuse
People use drugs and alcohol for many different reasons. In most cases, particularly with alcohol, people use them in social settings. Alcohol has long been used in a variety of celebrations spanning back thousands of years. Even Jesus drank wine with his apostles at the last supper. However, when drug and alcohol use goes beyond a social setting is when it becomes a problem. People may use drugs and alcohol as a way to cope with the stresses of everyday like after a long day at work. Having a drink can be a nice, relaxing way to kick back after a hard day at the office, but when that drink turns into three, four, five, six and so on then someone might have an issue with substance abuse. There are many different ways for someone to cope with stress if they are concerned about a blossoming substance abuse problem. Here are a few tips to help manage stress so you don’t have to turn to substance abuse as a coping mechanism. The first step in managing your stress is realizing that you’re stressed out in the first place. You need to admit to yourself that anxiety is starting to have a negative effect on your life before you can begin to control it. Once you’ve identified the sources of your stress, then you can begin to make changes in your lifestyle. One of the best ways to manage stress is through exercise. Even if you don’t want to pump iron at the gym, just going for a run or walk around the block every other day can help keep your stress levels low while also keeping you physically fit. Exercise releases endorphins in the brain which make a person happier. Some people choose to exercise in the morning to set the mood for the rest of the day. Others like to hit the gym after work to blow off a little steam in a constructive way. Regardless of where and when you exercise, it still goes a long way in stress management. It may seem like a no-brainer, but getting enough sleep is another really important stress relief technique. Doctors and sleep experts recommend seven to eight hours of sleep per night, but we all know getting those hours can be difficult. Allotting enough time to sleep can really reduce your overall stress levels. If you or someone you know is struggling with an addiction to drugs or alcohol then contact the trained addiction specialists at Drug Rehab Help in Woodbury, MN when you get a moment. It can help a loved one live a healthy and prosperous life. ...read more
