Back To School

School is back in session!   This news excites you or makes you cringe, there are some important defensive driving tips to remember when driving to class, school activities, events, and new laws. Emotions and Attitudes will effect us mentally and physically.  Testing, new schedules, everyday social issues, sports training or events can create huge distractions to us all.  When faced with these obstacles-- Good or Bad-- we will be distracted.  When approaching your vehicle take focus on the task at hand-- DRIVING.   If you need to dance off the excitment or walk of the bad day, do so before taking the vehicle into your possession.  School Parking Lots- can become a rat race.   Students please remember to be curtious of those around you and as tempting as it may be to do burn outs, rush into the parking space, or show off your talents as an encouragable teenager-- remember that the cost of insurance or the cost of hurting another individual lasts a lifetime.   Obey your speed limits, watch for other students and school buses. Parents when approaching pick up and drop off points allow enough pass and use turn signals when entering a space and leaving a curb park. School Zones and Crossings-- Watch for Pedestrains and until the snow hits we still have many students and adults riding bicycles.   Drivers are to stay further than 3feet from any bicyclist.   No matter where a pedestrain crosses in the state of Minnesota they have the right of way. Stopping for School Buses----    Drivers must stop with in 20 feet of a stopped School bus with its red flashers going and stop arm out while loading or unloading children or at a rail road crossing where buses must come to a complete stop.   Did you know that when the yellow flashers are activated on the school bus is telling you?    It is telling you that if they are traveling at speeds of 35mph or less they are about to stop with in 100ft and if above speeds of 35mph they are about to stop with in 300 feet. Your best Defensive driving technique will be S (scan- use of mirrors) I (identify- looking 12sec ahead ) P (from the 12 sec visual lead predicting areas of danger)  D (decide- make a decision on what you will do if the danger you predict occurs)  E (execute your decisions)  Limitations for Provisional Licensed Teens:   No Cell Phone Use Night Time Restrictions: 1st Six Months:   Driving between the hours of Midnight and 5a.m is prohibited Passenger Limitations: 1st Six Months:   Only one passenger under the age of 20, unless accompanied by parent or guardian, this includes the limitation of siblings as well, any passenger under the age of 20 2nd Six Months:   No more than three passengers under the age of 20. Vehicle Check Ups for Winterization: Tires-- balding areas, bulges, air leaks and tread.  Legal road tread is 1/16 of an inch-- 3/16 of an inch for rain  Hoses and belts and lights  Fluids-- checked and changed if needed  Winter Emergency Kit Prepared and in car ready for use --- Just in Case-----  Have a Fun Enjoyable School Year!!!!!!!!   ...read more

Sum, Sum, Summer-time

Bicycles, Walkers/Joggers, Motorcycles, Construction Fatigue and Night time travel, stop at least once every 2 hours to walk around, and sleep even if it is for an hour to regain focus.  Boating, fishing, swimming all of the summer activities we have been looking forward to may cause unforeseen fatigue.  Arriving late is better than not arriving at all. The above driving issues are often not seen by drivers who are enjoying the summer music, sunshine, or the unspeakable (texting, reading, grooming, child management, or passenger overload, etc..........) Motorcycles will blend in, once you have noticed a motorcycle in you path of travel try to maintain your sights on them.    Yielding to the right of way is always an issue with special vehicles and pedestrains.   We are all responsible for the behavior we use when sharing the road.   BUT   DRIVERS YOU DO HOLD THE ULTIMATE END RESPONSIBILITY.    This may not seem fair---- the human body is no contender when faced with a vehicle.    Blind Spots -----------  Over the shoulder, check and re-check. NEW LAW for construction areas;  the move it over law now applies to these situations.  Text regarding this issue may be found at www.mndriveinfo.org.   ...read more

Spring is in the Air

The snow is melting YEAH!!!!!!! Spring is in the Air. Foggy season is here as well.  Remember use your low beams, the fog line is the white line that seperates the shoulder of the road from the main road way.  Reduce speed and DEFENSIVE DRIVING. The cabin fever is about to break.  As we begin to travel with admiration of no more winter driving.  The reality is more accidents occur during the summer months. This is a direct misconception the roads are safer. That does not mean the drivers are driving defensively.   Remember to be on your best defense and as we all want to enjoy the warm weather approaching the responsibility belongs to all of us who share the road together to stay alert, be curtious, and remember to follow your road laws. Another common problem is pedestrains, bicyclists, children and my favorite the motorcycle can finally come out of the garage.    Motorcycles stop in 1/3 the distance of a four wheel vehicle, please keep enough space between the motorcycle and your vehicle.   We would all love to see adult, college pedestrain and bicyclists use the approriate crossing areas or hand signals.   Not all do and it is the law for vehicles to give the right of way no matter where they cross.  BE AWARE of your surroundings. If you use a minimum 12 second lead time --- which means you will be scanning the areas ahead of your vehicle to observe and predict situations that will require attention. Our children have experienced the cabin fever and are happy to be outdoors.   Most of them are unaware of road rules and are to distracted by the freedom of outdoor play that the vehicle approaching is not in their minds attention span.   PLEASE PAY EXTRA ATTENTION IN:  PARK, RESIDENTIAL, MALLS, DOWNTOWN AND POPULAR KID ZONES. HAVE A SAFE SPRING AND COME BACK FOR OUR SUMMER NEWSLETTER ...read more
