Donate to help the community

Donating things you no longer use is a terrific way to help others in your community. It doesn't really matter what it is. If it is clean, gently used or better, sellable, someone else will be thrilled to find it. I wish some folks who donate would to volunteer at the East Side Thrift Store so they had an opportunity to see how excited shoppers get when they find "just what they were looking for". Maybe they have been looking 20 minutes, sometimes 20 years. The stories about items being brought in and then the story the finder has are so touching and sometimes quite funny.  It is also fun when we get something in we are not what it is and so we display it hoping someone will tell us. Perfect example this week a winner of a beautiful little jar with geese on it came back and said it was actually an urn for pet geese that have passed away. And he actually has geese.  Some of the church women made some wonderful quilts that were to be given to the needy not sold. A homeless man living in his car got one in December. A family living in a shelter for 3 months finally got a place of their own. They have 4 children. Each person got one of those new quilts of their own. The store didn't have any matching sheets for the beds but the quilts brought smiles and warm coziness to each of them. Did I mention job training? One of the workers is getting her GED. She just got her own apartment for family. Another worker is going to school for nursing she just got an apartment for her family and is hoping  to get accepted into the army. Great things are happening.  Shop in and see what treasures you find. Donate some time and catch some smiles. Donate some money and help a family. See you soon.  Lynn, Manager, East Side Thrift Store. ...read more
