I had a truly bizarre experience at PC Outlet. I took in our laptop to have the jack replaced. The computer was working well, but the jack was broken, making it difficult to plug the cord into it. I used it just before taking it in, and there were no other problems. I paid up front. When I inquired three days later, they told me that the computer would not function because it was in need of a new motherboard. I disputed the need for a new motherboard, because, again, we had never had problems with the computer other than the somewhat damaged jack. I asked the owner to try another power cord to be sure that it had not been damaged. He asked me to hold, returned to the phone and replied that he tested it, and it was not the cord. After my VERY adament disagreement regarding the need for a new motherboard, and after telling him that I had just used the computer and sent out messages before bringing it in, he said that they would replace the motherboard at no charge. He said that it would take several days for the motherboard to arrive. I called three days later and was told that the person working on my computer was not available (this was the third time I had tried to contact this person), and that the manager was also not available (he is difficult to reach). Two days after that, I called again, and the manager was busy. Later that day, the manager returned my call to tell me that our computer was ready, and that the problem had been the power cord, which was damaged. When I picked up our laptop, I confronted the owner. I reminded him that I had held on the phone while he had tested the cord. He responded that he HAD tested the cord- the old one- and that it didn't work. I attempted to explain that he should have tried a NEW cord to see if the OLD cord was the problem, and he responded that they did not have a new cord at the time. Looking around the store, I wondered how in the world that could be possible. He then said that they replaced the jack, but the new jack was defective, so they replaced it with a second one, and also replaced the motherboard. He was then surprised to receive a call at home over the weekend from his employee stating that the problem was the cord. Given that I had been told over the weekend that they were still waiting on the motherboard to arrive, I found this difficult to believe. In the end, we have our computer, presumably a new motherboard, a new jack, a new cord, and a somewhat loud laptop. It sometimes sounds like there is a small fan going berserk inside it. Otherwise, it does seem to work as usual. I will leave it to the readers to decide whether this entire fiasco was the result of incompetency or something worse. I honestly have no idea.
