I don't know about you but I don't use my heating and cooling system for a few months when temperatures are comfortable and heating or cooling seems unnecessary. As soon as I start my system up I double check the filters to see how much dust and particles are removed by the new circulation. It is always best policy to change your air and humidifiers on a regular basis according to manufacturer instructions and it just makes sense. My filter needs to be changed monthly and there are others that only need to be replaced once a year. Dust, animal hair and dander and many other elements get filtered through these keeping my home air breathe-able, cleaner and healthier plus my furnace keeps working smoothly. Care needs to be taken when choosing a filter. Follow manufacturer recommendations. Hepa filters are top of the line and great for fine particulate capture but make sure it won't inhibit air flow making your furnace work harder to circulate the air. There are many grades of particular matter capture so find the right one for your system. The second filter you need to change is the humidifier filter. This generally need to be changed annually. Follow your replacement manual. Changing this filter regularly prevents calcification in the filter and keeps the water flowing freely through it and your home comfortable through the dry winter here in Michigan. A regularly changed filter help provide a longer running system and a more comfortable home. It keeps the service man at bay and is more affordable in the long run.
