As a business owner, the ability to accept and process credit cards is a must. But, as I quickly discovered, there are many different "merchant" accounts out there. They all charge different fees. Some charge different fees for different types of cards. They all require a contract of sorts. They charge you for the card reader. In the end, it can get quite expensive to accept credit cards, and quite confusing. Then I was introduced to the Square. If you haven't heard of this great device, you need to look into it. Accept card payments with no contract, monthly fees, or hidden costs. Just plug a free card reader into your mobile device and start swiping. Did you get that? Free. When you download the free software and set up an account, they will send you a free card reader. There's no monthly fee. Their fees are very competitive and the software if very easy to use. They have software for devices that run the Apple iOS and the Android OS. For businesses who take sales on the go like me, this is amazing. Photographer? Babysitter? Instructor? Now everyone can accept card payments, even on a mobile phone. Receipts are sent electronically, no more paper. My sales team, this means they can now complete an entire transaction on one mobile device. We do our Keynote presentation, sign the contract, and collect payment all on the iPad.
