About Peaks Island, ME
Peaks Island is part of the city of Portland, Maine, an area known for its booming summer tourism, sailing and fishing. It is adjacent to several institutions of higher learning, including the University of Southern Maine. The 2000 US Census pegged its population at 805, but during the summer months, there can be as many as 6,000 visitors on the island at any given time. Peaks Island has a rich history of a creative arts community, being a favorite vacation spot of Hollywood director John Ford, the Barrymore family, and several Broadway playwrights who would try out productions of their new works in the local theaters using local performers. Peaks Island attempted to secede from the city of Portland in 2006, but was blocked by the city council in doing so. Local businesses include Hannigan's Island Market and Brad's Bike Rental and Repair. The island has its own police station, public library, and public schools.
