Jessica is a very caring and conscientious person who loves dogs. She spends time with the dogs giving them exercise/play time and rest time. She will even spend time with a dog's owner(s), teaching ways to be good owners and have a happy dog. It is very obvious that she cares deeply for her charges. I can call anytime of the day when I leave my little dog. I do not feel the need, as I am confident all is well. The dogs are not kept in kennels, left on their own to entertain themselves. In this way, agitation and barking is kept to a minimum - no need to correct behaviors obtained by being confined. Jessica's space may be small, but her heart is very big! That is all any dog cares about. ...read more

Is Your Pet Jealous?
Pets can be jealous of your partner, baby, or anyone you give attention to. When your pet starts to exhibit behavior of being jealous, without speaking to your pet, put him/her in a room with a door and close the door. Only let him out if he/she gives you 3 seconds of quiet including not scratching at the door. If he/she starts barking while you're opening the door, close the door and count again. Do not speak to your pet during this part of the training. If you do speak you are confirming to your dog that he/she can get attention from you if he/she acts up. When he/she finally succeeds, praise him/her. Go back to where the jealousy started, and if he starts again, do the process again. Be prepared for this to take a while and it may not work with the first time you did the training. Some pets learn quickly but most don't. Have a pocket full of patience and treats. ...read more

What to do with your pet in a medical emergency....
I've had this situation happen a couple times....An owner has a medical emergency, hospitalization, and has no one to care for the pet. An owner's parents who live out of state has a medical emergency and has to leave immediately. What to do with their pet? Most day cares require a Meet and Greet where the pet is brought to the day care to meet the staff and other dogs to assure your pet will be comfortable there. It's the only way the day care provider can reasonably insure there will be no problems with the new dog. Even in an emergency, most day cares cannot risk taking a new dog on this short of a notice without the Meet and Greet. I urge you to plan for this situation before it happens. This gives you time to find the perfect day care/kennel before the need arises. Bring your list of questions to the Meet and Greet. This list should include if they have a free conditioning program. A conditioning program is taking your pet to the day care for a couple hours a couple times each month. This will give your pet a chance to assimilate into the day care dogs preventing your pet from being upset at being all of a sudden in a place with other dogs. Also ask if the day care will accept your pet at any time day or night. Little Dog Day Care has such a program. The conditioning visits are free. I prefer at least 2 visits per month. I can accept your pet no matter what time of day or night. If you find yourself in this position, please have your plan already in place..... ...read more

Lift Off
Being picked up or put down for small dogs can be scary for them. They react to that motion like we do on a roller coaster. Plus when picked up they are going backward. Before you pick up your small one, use the word "lift" or "lift off". This gives them a warning of what's going to happen. Charge the word as you do with any command. I use this with all the day care dogs. Sadie, in particular, was tense when picked up. I began using "lift" and have noticed she is less tense when picked up. When you put your small one down, set them gently on the floor/ground. Lower them slowly with good support of two hands. Do NOT lower them half way down then drop them. They have small legs and small bones that could easily break. Many small dogs have luxating patellas (floating knee caps) which can be aggravated when dropped even a couple inches. ...read more
