High Point Furniture Market -- So What's New!

We are just back from High Point, North Carolina, home of the largest furniture market in America.  We had a few special purposes for our shopping work: 1) to see new lines of upholstery, casegoods and accessories, 2) to learn about new trends in color and fabric, 3) to find ways to make our business greener by finding suppliers located closer to our store location and to find products that are green consciencious, and 4) to find products made in the USA.  New Lines-- we are continually looking for new products to add to our line.  Just before leaving for market, we made the decision to add Troll Beads to our Gallery. Troll Beadsis an exquisite line of art glass and precious metal beads that can be customized into fine jewelry -- bracelets, necklaces and rings.   And, we want to continue to add other "artful" jewelry to our offerings.  Let us know about any lines or jewelry artist that you think might be right for us. In the coming months, look for news from about new items from the Phillips Collection -- the company we classified as "Best of Show" in Hight Point.   We should say upfront that we are probably biased in this assessment since they share our vision on quality art and home decor:  great design, authentic materials, artistic value/workmanship/skill, and lastly innovation/imagination.   Visit their website: www.phillipscollection.comand let us know what you like.   Trends in Color:  Neutrals continue to dominate but have moved from browns to greys, bright colors such as yellow and orange continue to show well with a strong introduction  of the "berry" colors:  mullberry, strawberry, rasberry, and blackberry (really navy blue).  The combination trends are brown/green (toned in sage, celery and lime), brown/turquoise (toned in taupe in the brown the family and turquoise in subtle to strong values), and black and navy blue with a good splash of silver (steel to chrome ).    If you want to add a trendy edge to your decor -- find your favorite new or old combination and add some "berry" to accent.   EcoSmart:  Being sensitive to the environment is both responsible and good business.  So, we at Maris Elaine continue to take "affirmative action" to improve our operations by  finding new sources for enviromentally friendly products, particularly our casegoods (wood furniture) and in our operations by reducing our shipping distances.   Many companies in the US market the same or very similar product lines.   So we spent a lot of time at the Hight Point market finding vendors with products that match the quality and selection of our current vendors who ship from points west of the Mississippi and in Canada.  And, in addition there is real economic benefit in making these changes to contain our product and shipping costs.  We should also mention that our favorite vendor for casegoods, Four Hands, introduced two collections at market that are made of 100% recycled teak wood. This wood has been certified by SmartWood with an FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) label, stating that the wood is recycled and processed according to the highest social and ecological levels. These are the first FSC certified collections made of recycled teak from Indonesia.  All of the wood for these collections comes from old buildings, disused bridges and railway sleepers that were set to become dismantled after decades of use. The teak taken from those abandoned sites then gets turned into a variety of items including tables, casegoods, and bedroom sets. These pieces of wood have acquired such a natural texture from their past environs that just a simple sanded finish is all it takes to be turned into a stylish eco-friendly item. The factory that produces these home furnishings is adamant on a zero net waste. Therefore, all small pieces of wood are taken and bound together to be used for back panels of cabinets, flooring or stools. Even the sawdust left behind after production is combined with a resin and then cast into lamps, washbasins, and table tops.  Since 1996, recycling has been part of the company's business philosophy. In the beginning, they searched  India for architectural salvage and then upcycling these pieces into tables and cabinets.  The company continues to sell these one-of-a-kind antique pieces along with the rest of their product line. These new collections are just the latest developments to expand on this philosophy of upcycling.    Look for news on our new arrivals of casegood items. Made in the USA:  Yes, we want to find products that are made in the USA.   And, while it  is a big challenge to find quality, affordable products, we are trying.  We recently moved from a Canadian company to Rowe Furntiure for part of our upholstery line.   Our first orders have just arrived and  you will love it when you see it:  the workmanship is exceptional and the fabrics are fabulous in both quality and style.   What's more, Rowe is located in the next state, Virginia, so when our special orders were completed,  it delivered later in the same week -- what a treat! Remember, we can still special order for Christmas until November 3, 2008. ...read more
