5 Tips for Organizing Your Home Improvement Project

Are you contemplating some home improvements? Is a re-modeling or re-decorating project on your radar? Any one of these projects can seem daunting or overwhelming, but a little planning and (organization) can go a long way. In the long run, it can actually save you lots of time and money. Here are some tips to get you started. 1. Plan and Prepare - Planning ahead will save you time, money and lots of hassles. This process is the most important and can be the most time consuming, but is absolutely essential. In this step you want to measure your room and think about style and function. 2. Remove and rebuild - First, you must mentally prepare yourself to live with a mess for a while. Any redecorating or remodeling project is not going to be done overnight. It takes time to remove old carpet, wallpaper, window coverings etc. and then re-install these items and add new items such as new lighting, built in bookshelves, etc. 3. Walls and Floors - The next step is to paint walls and trim or install wallpaper and borders. Flooring can be done next. I often get asked if walls should come first or floors first. This really depends on what you are doing on the floors and if moulding will need to be replaced. 4. Complete the details and move in - This is the last and the most fun step because you are nearing completion of your project and you will get to see the fruits of your labor. Here is the order in which the installation should occur. Lighting, window treatments, area rugs, furniture, large accents, art, accessories, and finally, ENJOY!! 5. Finally, the best and most advisable way to attack your home improvement project, unless you are a great do-it-yourselfer, is to hire a professional. If you are not a great "do-it-yourselfer" a good professional can, in the long run, save you time, money, and most importantly, your sanity.
