Comparing CFL to LED Light Bulbs

Choosing the right type of energy saving light bulbs can be confusing. The two most popular styles are the CFL, (Compact Fluorescent Lamps) and LED (Light-Emitting Diode) which use different technology to light space and save energy than old incandescent lamps. Differences in the newer technology can be seen in: How they are made How they are used What the future holds How they are Made CFLs use argon and mercury gases to create light. An electric current is passed through a tube containing the gases which initially creates ultraviolet light which is invisible to the human eye. The ultraviolet light reacts with a coating inside the tube called phosphor. The reaction creates a visible light that can be used to brighten dark spaces. In most designs, a ballast is used to initiate the electrical activity needed to start the system and regulate the electrical current while the system is operating. These bulbs can take several minutes to warm up before they are fully functional. LEDs use Solid-State technology to produce immediate light. Minute chips are places on a circuitry board and covered with semi-conductor material. An electron passes through semi-conductor material to create a reaction. The reaction causes tiny LEDs to illuminate and create light. Some units come with one chip, but systems can be built utilizing many chips to lighten large areas. How they are Used CFLs are used in much the same way as incandescent bulbs, but use about 75 percent less energy to create the same level of light. CFL bulbs give off lighting in all directions to light up large and small areas like an incandescent bulb does. The CFL bulbs come in common styles that is easily adaptable into the home or business. Many can be screwed into existing light fixtures using the incandescent bulbs. One should be careful to use specified bulbs for fixtures with dimmer or three-way switches. The Kelvin scale is used to measure the intensity of the light; lower numbers mean softer light while higher numbers refer to stronger light. LED technology is developing and has some limitations compared to CFLs. The technology has been used successfully for years for use as electronic indicator lights on computers and alarm systems. There is still work to be done to enhance the technology to consistently produce white light that surpasses or meets the light produced by fluorescent bulbs. LED systems are good for directing light down onto a specific location, but lack the ability to emit light in all directions like a CFL bulb. What the Future Holds CFLs have proven to be more effective than incandescent lights at saving energy. However, LED technology promises to save even more energy once its usage is increased and come in a variety of shapes and sizes such asMR16, PAR38 and more. The United States Department of Energy has concluded that electricity demand for lighting will decrease by 33 percent by 2027 by adopting better usage of LED technology over other current technologies and reduce spending by roughly $265 billion. ...read more

Saving Energy Switching Globe Lights to CFL

In today's world, it seems to be all about saving energy and the environment. One of the ways homeowners and businesses are doing this is by switching from the olderwholesale CFL globelamps to the CFL bulbs. These bulbs fit into the same sockets as the older bulbs but offer users greater energy savings and many other benefits as well. Once you realize how much energy they will save, the switch will be easy, even if they do cost more. Actual Energy Use When light bulbs light up, only a portion of energy that is drawn into the bulb actually creates the light. For instance, with the traditional bulbs, only about 10 to 12 percent of the energy used was emitted as light. The rest was transformed into heat, which is why regular light bulbs are so hot to the touch after use. However, when you make the switch to CFL bulbs, they will use40 to 50 percentof the energy to create light, creating approximately four times the light as traditional bulbs while using the same amount of energy. This means a 25 watt CFL bulb will emit as much light as a traditional 100 watt bulb. Less Heat Because the CFL bulbs transform so much of the energy they use into light, the amount of heat generated by the lamp will decrease. In fact, they generate75 percent less heatthan traditional bulbs. If you have ever stood close to a lamp that has been on for a while, especially one that uses traditional bulbs, you may have noticed the room temperature was warmer. While this doesn't matter as much in the winter months, running lamps with traditional bulbs in the summer months will heat up your home and cause your air conditioning to run more. This will also increase your energy consumption and utility costs. Replacing Just One Bulb The potential for energy savings with CFL bulbs is huge, even if every household only changed one light bulb from a globe bulb to a CFL. According toEnergy Star, if every household changed one bulb, it would save more than $600-million dollars in a year and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by more than 9-billion pounds. To put this into perspective, this is about the same as emissions produced by 800,000 cars! Imagine how much more energy savings and environmental protection can be created by changing all the bulbs within you home. Saving energy and the environment has become a recurring theme in today's society. Everyone wants to find ways to reduce their energy use, carbon footprint and utility bills. One of the best ways to do this is by replacing all the globe bulbs in your home withCFL globe bulbs. Even though these bulbs cost more, they can save you as much as $6 per year each in energy costs and they last much longer as well. When you calculate all your savings versus the cost of the bulbs, you will still come out ahead.   ...read more
