Child Support
Many people wonder, how is child support determined.? In MD, our courts use the MD Child Support Guidelines. The guidelines take both parents' gross monthly income figures and plug them into the guidelines worksheet to arrive at the basic child support obligation. The figure depends on the number of children and whether a parent has primary custody or the parents have shared custody. In order for shared custody guidelines to apply, a parent must have at least 35% of the annual overnights in their home (i.e., 128 or more). The shared guidelines calculation reduces the child support based upon the premise that since the children are in the other parent's houshold more than 128 overnights or more, there is an increase in the cost to that parent for the day to day care and expenses for that child/children, and, as a result, the guidelines attempt to reflect that increased cost via a reduction in the child support obligation. Other expenses includable in the calculation include the costs of health insurance, day care, etc. On October 1, 2010, MD's child support guidelines were revised and the costs of child support obligations increased, to reflect adjustments for inflation. Bankruptcy and your credit score
Many people think that filing for bankruptcy will ruin their credit and lower their credit score. In reality, most of our clients, by the time they come to see our firm about bankruptcy, are already delinquent on many bills. As a result, their credit rating is already ruined and their credit score severely lowered. In reality, filing for a bankruptcy will improve the individual's credit score, since the bankruptcy "clears the decks" of debts previously owed. Once the bankruptcy discharge is granted, and assuming you have stable employment, you actually are viewed as a better credit risk and there is generally an increase in your credit score as a result.
