VCA Boston Road Animal Hospital
By reasonable animal lover at Citysearch July 27, 2011
Reasons I would not go back unless in DIRE need:\t\n\t\n5 1/2 hour visit, lack of updates while they had dog\t\nordered many tests my own vet said they wouldnt have\t\nfirst dr. recommended antibiotics - I passed\t\nsecond dr. said antibiotics would have made the nausea worse - glad I passed\t\nbasically a lot of money in a panic and no answers\t\n\t\nthey were friendly though - I'll give them that. All smiles when they did eventually talk to me.\t\n\t\nI didnt have a very good experience at the Boston Road VCA. I went there at 9pm after my pup had been throwing up non-stop for 3 hours. I was greeted very nicely at reception, filled out the paperwork, and was told they would get me into a room "shortly". OK - no worries.\t\n\t\nSo I waited while my pup threw up another 3 times in the waiting room, chatted with other pet owners, did notice a cat come in that needed emergency care more than my pukey dog so I was OK with them bumping me.\t\n\t\n2 1/2 hours later I got put into a room. it was now 11:30 and I hadnt eaten dinner, it was freezing in there, and I was growing really tired. So was my pup. We waited in the room and finally the doctor showed and talked me into paying $650 in tests. OK - I want my pup to feel better as soon as possible so lets do the xray and blood tests. They only took a couple minutes to have the paperwork with the estimate in front of me by the way.\t\nThey took my pup and I waited in the exam room... and waited... and waited.... it was now 1:30am. I found someone in the back room - told him I was growing really anxious at this point, so he offered to find someone for me. They came in, told me the tests werent done (2hours later?) but that I could take him home with anti nausea shot blah blah blah - essentially they didnt know why he was throwing up but they could make it stop. They recommended antibiotics but I refused them because they couldnt say it was a parasite and no diahrrea ... I wanted to hold off til the tests were done. They said they would discharge my pup.\t\nI waited.\t\nwaited.\t\nwaited.\t\nAnother hour passed before they brought my dog out and had me pay my now $700 bill (they added another test for good measure once they learned I had insurance). \t\n2:30 am - get home - my dog pukes again.\t\n\t\nThe next morning my dog was still very lethargic and had diahrrea so I called the VCA again to ask about the antibiotics they were pushing the night before, and this time I got a call back from Dr. Daniel. So he, in reading my chart, left me a message saying that he would NOT recommend antibiotics - that it would make the nausea worse - and that he recommended I follow up with my regular vet.\t\n\t\nSo I called my regular vet - VCA Shaker Road - and Lynn was so great and really answered all my questions. She said they would not have ordered all that blood work (great, glad i paid for them at Boston Rd) but she was concerned about the lethargy and recommended I go back to Boston Road if he still wouldnt eat today. Luckily my pooch is more upbeat today and we came home to a clean floor... so... \t\n\t\nSo yeh, I wouldnt go back unless my animal was seriously seriously in need of help - I would rather drive farther and see a place that doesnt make you wait 5 1/2 hours to go home with a still sick dog. I understand things are tough to diagnose, and other things were more emergent - but I could have been told it would be so long so I could have called my husband to bring me a sweatshirt and some food! I had no way of knowing - they kept telling me "someone will be right with you". And it is baffling that one doctor rec antibiotics without my dog having diahrea... didnt she know it would make it worse? I just have no faith in that place now. \t\n ...read more
