"I Want Candy": The Candy Buffet Trend

The candy buffet is one of the hottest trends in weddings and events today.  A tower of sweets evokes a whimsical "kid-in-a-candy-store" feeling, whatever your age.  Harken back to your childhood and recall playing Candyland, where one can become lost in a candy cane forest or stuck in the molasses swamp… remember the first time you watched "Willy Wonka," when you fantasized about being surrounded by sweet, edible deliciousness.  Aside from adding a fun, fantastical element and fairytale flavor to your event, they are a great way to thank your guests for attending, in lieu of pre-packaged favors.  They are beautiful, colorful and fun.    A candy buffet can certainly be a do-it-yourself project, but when you consider all of the elements that go into one (setup, teardown, linens, glassware, scoops, cello bags or other packaging, ties, accessories and lots and lots – and LOTS – of candy), this may just be something to leave to the pros.  This is likely to be the most cost-effective option when you consider the cost of renting or purchasing all of the various accessories you will need, and professional candy buffet designers are able to get the very best prices for bulk candy.   Regardless of whether you are doing it yourself or going with a candy buffet professional, the fun part is choosing the candy you plan to offer.  Consider several things when making your selections: your wedding colors and theme, your childhood candy favorites, and, of course, the weather and venue.  You don't want your candy buffet to become a puddle of melted chocolate if you're hosting an outdoor event in the middle of July.    Kasey's Candy Buffets Kasey's Candy Buffets, in Port Washington,  NY carries a wide range of products to suit a variety of budgets and tastes.  Their entire focus is meeting the needs of their customers, and as a result a high percentage of their business results from repeat customers and referrals.  Their small candy buffet, which serves up to 50, will run you about $300, while their large (which serves over 100) will cost about $800.  Follow theirFacebook page to keep up-to-date on current happenings and promotions.   The Candy Buffet If you live on the West coast, you might considerThe Candy Buffet, based in Apple Valley, CA.  They specialize in creating delightful and unique candy buffets with your chosen colors and/or theme, and your choice of candy for any occasion.  The Candy Buffet prides itself in not offering pre-designed buffets; their buffets are unique to each event.  Aside from weddings, consider them for wedding rehearsals, engagement parties, bachelorette parties, wedding and baby showers, and anniversaries.  In addition to buffets, they create fun, beautiful centerpieces.  Find them onFacebookfor current offerings and photos of some of their work.   Sugar Lumps Candy and Dessert Buffets Sugar Lumps Candy and Dessert Buffets prides itself on being the tri-state area's premier candy art and gourmet dessert buffet designer.  Offering an extensive assortment of confections, they will work with you to select candies, chocolates and desserts which will coordinate best with your event.  They offer custom options and pricing, but among their standard offerings is "L'amour Petit Bonbon" (Little Candy Love), which serves approximately 20 to 50 guests and includes a selection of 3 to 5 different candies 5 to 7 glass jars, and "J'adore Candi Couture," which will accommodate 151 to 200 guests, and offers a selection of 10 to 15 different candies in 15 to 20 glass jars.  They serve a wide geographical area, including New Jersey, New York, Maryland, Virginia and DC.  Follow them onFacebook and don't miss out on current news and happenings.   A Sweet Ending Candy Buffet Serving New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland and New Hampsire,A Sweet Ending Candy Buffet  creates candy buffets that are beautiful works of art.  Their offerings include their Small Buffet, which will serve approximately 20 to 50 guests, includes 3 to 5 different candies with 5 to 7 glass jars, and their Grand buffet, which will accommodate 151 to 200 guests, and includes 10 to 15 different candies in 15 to 20 glass jars.  For an additional charge of $15/hr., they will even supply Candy Striper Girls to remain at your event and supervise your buffet.  Check out theirFacebookpage and become a fan to be in-the-loop on everything A Sweet Ending Candy Buffet is up to. ...read more

It's (Not) Easy Being Green: Planning an Eco-Friendly Wedding

August 23, 2010Like most people nowadays, you're doing your best to live a more eco-friendly lifestyle than you once did.  You choose reusable shopping bags, carry an aluminum thermos rather than buying bottled water, and are the first one on your block to proudly display your accumulation of recyclables on the curb every other week.  But the idea of having a green wedding can be a bit daunting.  Planning a wedding is a lot of work, and the pressure to make environmentally-responsible choices might not be foremost in your mind.  But the truth is, it's not an all-or-nothing proposition, and eco-friendly choices are available at every turn.  Here are some ideas to consider. Your Gown It's easy to find dresses made out of polyester, but remember that polyester is petroleum-based.  Consider a dress made out of more natural fibers, such as cotton or silk.  Another way to minimize the effect on the environment is to buy or borrowa gently-used or vintage dress.  Or, choose a dress that you can wear again –  cutting it down for another event, perhaps.    Your Invitations There are many options for environmentally-friendly wedding invitations.  We offer a large selection to choose from. Birchcraft Studios is now using soy-based inks for all thermography printing except metallic colors. Theirrecycled papersinclude up to 100% post-consumer stock.  In addition, they also offer invitations printed on100% cotton paper. Carlson Craft offers environmentally friendly wedding products by many lines, including Naturally Ever After™, Chloe B.® and The Wedding Collection™.  Their offerings include products that are printed on paper that is Green Seal Certified, made with 100% post-consumer fibers and created without the use of chlorine compounds. McPherson's andStylart  both offer products from the Naturally Ever After™ line, which features products crafted on quality, recycled papers containing at least 30% post-consumer fibers.  Your Flowers Find a florist who carries organically-grown, local flowers that are in season. Flowers that have been grown organically have been grown without the use of pesticides and other dangerous chemicals.  Buying a local product will reduce the distance that they need to be shipped, thus reducing carbon emissions.  Look for labels such as ‘eco-friendly', ‘socially responsible' and ‘Fair Trade.' If you live in New York, visitGardenia Organic, New York's first sustainable florist.  In Boston, visitFaxon Green, where they compost all living material, recycle everything, use the cardboard boxes and cartons of vases to pack bouquets for delivery, and do not use floral foam, plastic or chemicals. Or visitOrganic Bouquetto order organic flowers online.  Reuse your flowers.  After the ceremony, have a friend transport them to the reception so that you can use them as table decorations, or a beautiful background for your photos.  After the party, send them home with your guests. Another option which is gaining popularity is the use ofsilk flowers, rather than natural. A great benefit of these flowers is that you can keep them forever as a special memento from your wedding day.   Your Favors Buy edible orconsumable favors.  These include chocolate, cookies, jams, soy candles, free-trade tea or coffee.    Or, you might choose live seedling favors.  Environmental and earth-friendly, with a natural elegance, seedlings byGreen World Project  make excellent favors, and can be personalized for any occasion.  TheNational Arbor Day Foundation also makes it easy for eco-friendly brides to give trees for their favors. The trees are delivered in an easy recyclable plastic tube with your choice of customized label. Your recipients can plant their trees right away, store them in a refrigerator, or grow them indoors for months. In lieu of favors, consider making a donation to a charitable organization in honor of your wedding guests (a choice we are seeing more and more often). Ethiopian Orphan Relief, Inc. (EOR), for example, is doing wonderful work to improve the living conditions and lives of orphaned children in Ethiopia.  Your guests will no doubt find this to be far more meaningful than a tin of jordan almonds will ever be. Your Decor Candles add so much romantic ambiance to a room, and are a great alternative to flowers.  Soy and beeswax candles are cleaner and burn longer than traditional candles, and are not made using petroleum by-products. Scent-Sations, Inc.specializes in soy candles, and has a large variety of colors and scents to choose from. Your Photographs Find a photographer who works in digital format.  Digital photos are more environmentally friendly because they don't require the use of toxic chemicals and don't waste paper.  If you would still prefer film photography, discuss less toxic developing methods with your photographer.  And please don't place disposable cameras on the tables at your reception.  Most of your guests will bring their own digital cameras, and will be happy to share their photos with you. Your Caterer Choose a caterer who specializes in local, organic food. Simply using locally grown vegetables and meats both supports the local economy and reduces transport carbon emissions.  Consider a vegetarian or vegan menu.  Or, if you choose to serve meat, make sure that it is organic and cruelty-free.  Choose a plated meal, rather than a buffet.  If the food is prepared and served based on the actual number of guests, it alleviates the need to make the extra food that is needed on the buffet. This also tends to result in fewer dirty dishes, which reduces the amount of hot water and detergent needed to clean them.  And don't forget to choose fair-trade coffee and tea to accompany yourorganic wedding cake! It might not always be "easy" to make green choices, but these choices (along with all of the other eco-friendly lifestyle changes you have already made) will help to make the earth a better place for your children.  Now… start looking for thatgently-used dress!*KLM Printing is a Massachusetts-based online retailer of fine wedding invitations, favors and bridal accessories at discounted prices.  Find us atwww.klmprinting-online.com orwww.facebook.com/KLMPrinting, or email us atklm_printing@yahoo.com. ...read more

August and Everything After: Choosing a Theme for Your Wedding

August 9, 2010Now that it's August and we suddenly find ourselves bombarded with countless television back-to-school ads, my autumn-themed wedding of nearly eight years ago seems to be fresh in my memory again.  There was a reason my fiance and I chose the fall for our event… in our combined opinion, there is no season more romantic than autumn.  The crisp, dry New England days evoke memories of hayrides and apple-picking, and the chilly nights are perfect for cuddling under a quilt or by the fire with a good wine.  I even love the scent that hangs in the air… a combination of the sweet-smelling fallen leaves and the wood-burning stoves that come out of retirement at this time of year.  It was a no-brainer that we would choose this season. The rich color palette of the season fueled my creativity as I chose my invitations, flowers, attendant dresses and centerpieces (which were simply baskets of glossy red apples that my fiance and I harvested ourselves at alocal orchardjust one week prior… sometimes less really IS more).  My bridesmaids seemed lit from within when they walked down the aisle in their gorgeous garnet-colored dresses (each one in a different style from the other due to the fact that each maid was beautiful in her own way).  Our bouquets (by the amazingFrugal Flowerin Sudbury, MA) contained a riot of autumn-colored flowers, accompanied by fall leaves and berries… just gorgeous.  It didn't matter to me one bit that it rained so much that I half expected to see a great ark laden with a pair of each of Earth's creatures floating languidly by thechurch… the inclement weather outside simply added to the cozy ambiance of the historical home at which we hosted our post-ceremony celebration (atStow Acresin Stow, MA), roaring fire in the great stone fireplace and all.  Agiant hollow foam pumpkingraced our gift table, ready to collect the many envelopes we received from our generous guests, and lovelypreserved autumn leaveswere scattered upon every available surface.  To this day, there is nothing I would do differently. I believe that this is the key to planning a wedding that has real heart.  Rather than haphazardly choosing elements for your day, select a theme that speaks to you, whether it be a season, a holiday, or even simply a favorite color.  It just makes everything more FUN, not just for you as you plan, but for your guests as well, as they take in all of the details that you so thoughtfully considered.   Even now, our family and friends reminisce about our wedding as being one of the truly great weddings that they have attended.  This is by no means due to an exorbitant event budget, but rather the fact that our wedding represented who we are.  Isn't that the kind of wedding you'd want to attend?  *KLM Printing is a Massachusetts-based online retailer of fine wedding invitations, favors and bridal accessories at discounted prices.  Find us atwww.klmprinting-online.com orwww.facebook.com/KLMPrinting, or email us atcustomer_service@klmprinting-online.com. ...read more
