Geek Choice

Recently, a freak accident introduced my cousin's laptop to a whole lotta Goldschlager. I immediately took responsibility, because I am a person of great integrity and also my hands smelled like cinnamon. Therefore, I really wanted to make sure that I got the best possible fix for her. Everything about Geek Choice was fantastic. I got a coupon for $30 off! Also, Joe was great to work with. He gave me an idea of what he expected would be needed, which was a new keyboard and a little clean up; he didn't try to fleece me, even though clearly, if he'd said it needed new tires, I would have wailed right over to Goodyear. Even better, while Geek Choice only orders parts from trusted vendors, I was hoping to use replacement parts that my friend can get on the cheap. I was shy to ask, but Joe was super cool about it! He only charged for labor at a very reasonable rate! I fully anticipate needing frequent help with electronics, and these guys are now my go-to! ...read more

Password Security

If you're concerned with security, passwords should be a big section of your To Do list. Whether it's a hacker gaining access to your WiFi network, your protected work files, or your email, using a secure password is important. When you're considering WiFi passwords, opting for WPA2 veruses WEP is a good move. But using WPA2 without using a secure password isn't enough. If a dedicated hacker is determined to access your WiFi, WPA2 is vulnerable to what is called a "dictionary attack". What this means is that using words found in a dictionary, a program tries each word that fits the length of your password. A sophisticated dictionary attack will also combine words. Using words that aren't found in a dictionary, as well as using numbers or special characters, will increase the possible passwords, making it feasibly impossible for a program to break your password. This also holds true for passwords for anything you use - like email or protected accounts. Secure passwords do not have to be hard to remember, and simply replacing letters with symbols or numbers isn't always enough: @ instead of a, 3 instead of E, ! instead if i, etc. These substitutions are commonly made, and many password cracking programs are designed to incorporate this. When you're thinking about passwords, longer is better. The recommended minimum for a secure password is 10 characters, but that is certainly not a limit. Your particular router should tell you if there is a maximum number of characters your password should be. If you're trying to protect your password from people who know you, not just password cracking programs, it is also a good idea not to use names and dates that are important to you. Birthdates, anniversaries, pet names, etc, are all likely passwords, and easily guessed. Add numbers or special characters in the middle of your password, as opposed to the end. HDD operation rules

Hard disk drive is one of the most important components of a computer and, therefore, it should be handled with special care. In this article we will try to give several general recommendations that will allow you to extend the life of your hard disk drive. First of all, these tips concern the protection of hard disk drive against mechanical damages, installation, powering and temperature regime. 1. Protection against mechanical damages. One should pay special attention to measures preventing hard disk drive from mechanical damage, because even the slightest mechanical damage may lead to irreversible data loss. Hard disk drive is so vulnerable that a fall even from the height of 10-15 cm when it is OFF and 3-4 cm when it is ON may lead to a number of issues. To avoid such problems just follow most simple requirements - firmly place computer unit and avoid any movements during operation. 2. Installation. When installing hard drive you need to pay attention to several moments: place it in such way that it avoids mechanical damages and static discharges and, secondly, avoid vibration and overheating. What position may be deemed as correct? First of all a hard disk shall be mounted in the coolest area of the unit with four screws. Then you have to determine its orientation - horizontal or vertical. In general, there are no strict requirements in this matter, but manufacturers still recommend to place hard disk drive horizontally with lid at the top, since different than that location may lead to unnecessary overheating and falling off of wear products from the drive. Also remember to connect ribbons and power cable correctly. They should not be bent or restrained. Read more here:http://www.inforecovery.com/blog/hdd-operation-rules ...read more
