When a customer requests a sample it suggests that they are interested in possibly purchasing your product. Therefore to encourage the sale, it is a good ideal to provide the sample. The cost issue is usually a concern when mailing is involved. In my experience with sample requests, it is usually okay to request that the shipping costs be covered and maybe a small unit fee for the sample itself. The ideal is to get the sample into the customer's hand so refrain from over pricing the item. Just cover the basic costs. The profits that will be received from the sale will more than make up for the sample itself. Try creating a smaller sample offering in order to minimize the cost of shipping. However, the cost of the sample should be in direct proportion to the resulting sale. In other words, if the sale will net $1000's of dollars in revenue then a $10 sample would be inappropriate.
