How to Create a Pet Emergency Kit
When disaster strikes, are you prepared? The recent tornadoes in Oklahoma have been on my mind. We live in an area prone to tornadoes. Owensboro, KY is also on the New Madrid fault line. We have been told for many years our area has the potential for a severe earthquake. Thankfully we have a full basement underground where we can shelter in times of storm. While every disaster is different, having your supplies stored together is going to be a big help if you find yourself in the wake of a storm. Just as you need food and water, so do your pets. One gallon per person and one gallon per pet is a good idea to keep on hand. While some folks say three days supply is enough, I recommend a week. This may sound like a lot, but consider it could take more than three days for any aid to get to you. Stash it in your storm shelter and rotate it regularly. Believe it or not, most bottled water has an expiration date of a year on it. Be sure to check. Be sure to keep some of your dog’s food with your other emergency supplies. We use a plastic 3 lb coffee container for our two dog’s food stash. This lasts our two dogs about 10 days. Our dogs eat 1 cup of food per day each, or two cups total. Like the water, be sure to rotate your pet’s food regularly, so it is always fresh. Pets don’t do well if their food is switched suddenly, so it is extremely important to keep an emergency stash for them. We’ve covered the food and water and you know what that means comes next.—clean up. Keep some plastic gloves, paper towels and cleaning solution handy. Trash bags are good to have on hand, as well. It goes with the territory. You will also want to keep a spare leash for your pet and a crate/kennel handy. An exercise pen would work, too. Shelters are getting better, but they don’t always accept pets. Make sure you have a safe place for your pets. You will likely have plenty of work to do, so you will need to make sure your pets are safely contained and away from debris, etc… Hopefully, your pet is already wearing a collar with identification. If not, now would be a good time to get that done. Other than that, consider having a copy of your pets’ vet records close by. If your pet has medicine this is especially important. Make sure the medicine is stashed, too, if you can. Just like us, pets like to have familiar things around. Add a toy, bone or blanket in your pet emergency kit. Keep your pet first aid kit nearby, too. Some essential items to have are antiseptic wipes, hydrogen peroxide, gauze and tape. There are a number of packaged pet first aid kits available, you might want to get one to have on hand,. Of course, you will want to have the usual suspects such as a battery operated radio, flashlights, batteries, matches and candles. These are essential. Having experienced the tornado in 2000 and the ice storm in 2009, I can tell you batteries are your best friends. During the ice storm we were without power for nearly 2 weeks and we lost phone service for three weeks. It gets very dark at night without any electricity. ATMs and banks may be down due to power outages, so keep some cash on hand. You will also want to have a camera stashed to take pictures of damage for insurance purposes. It will make things go smoother for you. It’s good to have a fire extinguisher around, in case you need it. may sound like a lot to get together, but it’s probably items you already have on hand, it’s just a matter of getting yourself organized. I hope you never need it, but it is always best to prepared rather than scared. ...read more
