There's No Place Like Home

Recently, my 88 year old mother was hospitalized for a urinary tract infection.  Prior to her hospitalization, she had mobility issues and difficulty performing routine tasks such as toileting, bathing and dressing. Due to the difficulty of performing these activities, I was uncertain she could return home.  I was fearful that she may have to leave her home and go to a long term care facility. Upon discharge from the hospital, my mom was transferred to a skilled nursing facility for physical therapy.  She participated in occupational and physical therapy for approximately 30 days.  The therapists worked on strength training, increasing her mobility and independently performing daily tasks such as bathing, dressing and toileting.  Honestly, I didn't anticipate a positive outcome due to her status prior to her hospitalization. My mom returned to her home last week.  She has caregivers coming in to assist her.  On the other hand, the caregivers are basically there to monitor her while she independently dresses herself, bathes etc.  My mom has a stairlift as she lives in a two story home and the bedrooms are on the second floor.  Therefore, she utilizes the lift to go to and from her bedroom on the second floor.  We installed grabbars in the bathrooms and shower so she can bath and toilet independently. Rails were installed along the entrance of her home to provide easier entry. There are so many community resources available to assist with the elderely to be able to remain in their homes independently without going to a nursing facility.  Without these assistance devices installed in my mom's home along with other community resources, she would be residing in a nursing facility.  There's no place like home! ...read more
