The concept for Delicious came out of the growth of the internet itself. As more and more websites popped up, it got harder and harder for individuals to keep track of and bookmark all of the websites they were adding to their favorites list on their browser. Folders got bulky, lists grew long, and it was hard to remember which folder had which particular bookmarked site, meaning wasted time looking around. Then came Delicious. Delicious built a website that is essentially an on-line repository for subscriber’s “favorites” lists. By signing up for the service, when users come across a web page they want to bookmark, they just click the Delicious icon on their browser’s toolbar, and the webpage will be saved to the user’s account. Better yet, users can tag the webpage with any words they want to help find the page later, and can add as many tags per webpage as they want. The site will automatically begin to categorize your bookmarked pages as they begin to accrue based on similar tags. Also, the page will be bookmarked in each folder you have a tag for, so if you find a great site that has a phenomenal key lime cheesecake recipe, for example, you can tag the page as food, desserts, baked, cheesecake, key lime, and recipe, and when you open a folder containing any one of those words the webpage will be shown. Delicious also allows you to share your collection of sites with your friends so they can look at your saved sites, and vice-versa. And when you visit the Delicious homepage, it will show you the pages that are getting the most bookmarks at the present time, so you can check them out too and see what all the interest is in these hot topics.
