The biggest problem with a water heater is that the old saying "Out of sight out of mind." nearly always applies. Water heaters are have 6 year warranty's for a reason because that is how long the manufacturer builds them to last. You don't wait for your tires to blow before you replace them so why wait for your water heater to burst, they cost about the same and you water heater will last longer than your tires. Kiplinger's newsletter states that the second leading insurance claim for a homeowner is water damage caused by water heaters bursting or water lines and appliances malfunctioning with the average claim over $7,000. We suggest getting a new water heater when the warranty expires or at least every eight years and also installing a Flood Guard that would turn your water main off in case something ever did go wrong.
