Why should you burn soy candles in your home instead of paraffin wax candles? Well, lets first look at what paraffin wax candles are made of, paraffin wax is a byproduct of petroleum refining and produce carcinogens and soot when burned. It has been stated that the soot from paraffin wax candles contain much of the same toxins produced by burning diesel fuel. So many of the "healthy" aromatherapy candles available today actually do more harm than good when they are made with paraffin wax. The process of making paraffin wax starts at the bottom of the barrel. Once petroleum is processed into gasoline, diesel fuel, motor oil, kerosene, and other fuel products, the waste that is rejected by the gasoline industry is whitened with industrial strength bleach, then a few other ingredients are added and what you have is the very wax that you are burning in your homes. When you burn your candles do you notice black stuff around the edge of your candle glass? Well that black stuff is soot. The black soot is emitted into the air, on your walls, ceilings, curtains, furniture, etc. and into your ventilation systems. You, your family and your pets are breathing these toxins into your bodies every time you inhale. Paraffin wax emits 11 known toxins when burned, including toluene, benzene, and formaldehyde, which are known to be carcinogens. Many people with allergies and/or asthma are unable to burn paraffin wax candles due to the irritants. Paraffin wax is also very difficult to clean up if spilled or if you want to clean out your container and re-use it. So do you really want to burn paraffin wax candles in your homes? What are soy candles made of? Well soy wax is made from American grown soybeans. It is a renewable resource, its biodegradable and environmentally safe. Its made in America and supports our local farmers. Soy candles burn about 50% longer than paraffin wax candles. Soy wax candles emit very little to no soot, they burn slower and cooler, which helps to distribute the fragrance better. Soy wax is non-toxic and less likely to aggravate allergies or asthma. Soy wax is much safer for you, your family, your pets and your home! Another great thing about soy wax is that it cleans up with just soap and water. You can wash and recycle your jars if you wish. If a candle label doesn't specifically say its soy then it is most likely paraffin wax. Also beware, many candle makers are now coming out with soy/paraffin wax blends which in my opinion may be less toxic, but still toxic none the less. Now that you know the difference, you can better choose which kind of candle wax is best for you and your household.
