I am a friend of one of the principals of BNB Battery.I own a company that could benefit from their service. I rented a single machine in January to help them out. I don't regret it. Our company is now regenerating our batteries instead of buying new ones - and at quite a savings. I recommend them to anyone with 12 volt batteries in their vehicles. Now that they have released their Alliance program, they can service consumers too. BK ...read more

I own an aggregate company in north central Indiana and started using the BNB product in January 2011. I have many kinds of equipment in my asset base with many different manufacturers' batteries. The regenerator has worked seemlessly and is helping our maintenance group discover there is a significant difference in the quality of batteries we've been buying. While the machine doesn't fix every battery we put on it, the results have justified the rental many times over. SR ...read more

You lost $60,000 due to a late delivery because of what?

You lost $60,000 due to a late delivery because of what? 14th July 2011Mickey Brooks, Principal, A-New Battery/BNB Battery Guest Blogger for Roadworthy Truck Insurance - Mickey BrooksPrincipalA-New BatteryBNB Batterymbrooks@a-newbattery.commbrooks@bnb-battery.comRecently, while researching statistics for a potential client regarding equipment failures, I came across a series of studies on the most common causes of on-the-road vehicle failures that make a fleet or other vehicle less Roadworthy. I must admit, because of the business I’m in, that I was hoping to find a statistic showing battery failure as a leading issue. I wasn’t surprised in that regard. What was surprising was that I found over 20 different sources of the data with the same result – start/stop battery failures were the number one cause of on-the-road downtime causing a significant decrease in productivity. There were a variety of reasons given as to why batteries were the most common cause of breakdowns including, wet/damp and cold weather, hot weather, terminals and clamp connections, corrosion, loss of voltage, and charging systems faults. Other than the weather issues, most of these items are completely correctable or preventable through regular and quality maintenance procedures. The other major reason given for battery failure or a shortened life cycle was reported as “short journeys or insufficient use of the vehicle”. Both of these result in under charging of the battery which causes a phenomena called sulfation. Sulfation of the battery occurs when battery voltage remains under 12.4 volts causing a film to form on the plates in the battery. Over time, the sulfated material will increase and harden to the point that it will eventually destroy the ability of the battery to generate volts and amps. But, there are a number of causes of sulfation in a battery – here’s a brief list: Batteries sit too long between charges. As little as 24 hours in hot weather and several days in cooler weather. Battery is stored without some type of energy input. “Deep cycling” an engine starting battery. These batteries can’t stand deep discharge. Undercharging of a battery to only 90% of capacity. Heat of 100F plus increases internal discharge. As temperatures increase so does internal discharge of the battery. A new fully charged battery left sitting 24 hours a day at 110F degrees for 30 days would most likely not start an engine. Low electrolyte level – battery plates exposed to air will immediately sulfate. Incorrect charging levels and settings. Most cheap battery chargers can do more harm than good. Cold weather is also hard on the battery. The chemistry inside the battery does not make the same amount of energy as a warm battery. A deeply discharged battery can freeze solid in sub zero weather. Parasitic drain – a load put on a battery with the vehicle key turned off. Not such a brief list, right? The fact is that most operators have little control over how the vehicle will be used with regard to the sulfation causes shown above. Sulfation will happen. It happens in every lead-acid battery ever produced. Even the best maintenance program won’t keep your fleet more Roadworthy (in tip top shape, per Donn) if it doesn’t include a system that can reduce, manage, or eliminate sulfation. And now for the good news – there are ways to manage this battery killer and greatly increase battery life and performance –andthey are less costly and offer greater value than replacing batteries on a regular basis.
