About Wood River, IL
Wood River is a part of the Madison County region/metro area of Illinois. As of the 2000 census, the city had a population of 11, 296 and it has a land area of 6.1 square miles. Wood River is often known for its history with the Lewis & Clark Expedition where it is regarded as the starting point. Years later, Wood River greatly expanded with the arrival of Standard Oil and was officially incorporated as a city in 1908. Businesses in Wood River include Kienstar-illinois, Llc, Mers, Inc., and the Ytb Travel Network of Illinois Inc. The Olin Corporation in the nearby town of East Alton also acts as a major employer to the Wood River Community.
