Panama is located in Montgomery and Bond Counties, Illinois. According to the 2000 census the village has a population of 323. Panama was founded in the early 20th century and the Shoal Creek Coal Company of Chicago had a mine in there. Union organizer John L. Lewis lived in Panama as a coal miner between 1909 and 1915. Area attractions include Panama Lake, Doneilson Cemetery, and the Historical Society of Montgomery County. Sorento School is located in nearby Sorento.
