The Suzuki Method

Many people (and music teachers for that matter) are a little fuzzy on the Suzuki Method of teaching music.  There is a misconception that Suzuki students do not learn how to read music.  This could not be further from the truth.  There was a problem when the method came to this country because music reading was not dealth with in training teachers.  This was due to the fact that in Japan the instrumental teachers do not have to teach this skill since it is taught to all children in the school system.  Once we understood that in this country note reading was included in teacher instruction. The foundation of the method is that all students can learn to play a musical instrument just as all children learn how to speak their native language.  First comes saturated listening, then application and finally after you have a grasp of the language you learn how to read.  This is why Suzuki students are able to play more advanced pieces earlier and their  playing is much more musical.  It's also the reason students can start lessons at a much earlier age (as young as three). The Highs and Lows of Piano Lessons

I've been teaching piano since 1985, and I've also been the parent of a child taking lessons.  I feel this gives me an advantage, since I can relate to the parents who call me wondering what they can do to get their child to practice or should they pull their child out of lessons.  I offer fwo pieces of advice - the first being to talk to your child's teacher for their assessment and advice as to how to get back on track.  I can't stress enough how important it is to have a good relationship with your child's teacher.  Keep them in the loop and work cooperatively to solve the problem(it's part of what you're paying them for).  The second is not to make a hasty decision to pull your child from lessons because things aren't going so well at the moment.  As with anything else in life there are peaks, valleys and probably mostly plateaues.  It is the rare family that only experiences smooth sailing.  Take stock of the situation:  is there something in your lifestyle that has changed or in your child's life (i.e. more homework, adding more after school commitments)?  Has your attitude, influence or involvement changed?  Do you see any areas where you may be able to improve the situation?  Come up with a plan, put some changes in place and give it a reasonable amount of time to see if it makes a difference.   ...read more
