Muddy was originally built as a coal mining village to provide housing for workers of the O'gara #12 mine on the north bank of the Saline River. Area attractions include Shawnee National Forest, Harmonie State Park, and Wabash Lowlands Wetlands Conservation Area. Southeastern Illinois College is located in nearby Harrisburg.
