Jacksonville is a city in and the county seat of Morgan County, Illinois. The town, which was founded in 1825, was named for future President Andrew Jackson. The city is known for being a major stop along the Underground Railroad. Among the biggest schools in Jacksonville are Illinois College and the MacMurray College. It is also home to four state run institutions including the Jacksonville Correctional Center and the Illinois School for the Visually Impaired. The city is home to many cultural offerings such as the Jacksonville Theatre Guild and the Art Association of Jacksonville. The biggest companies located here include the Eli Bridge Company that manufactures Ferris wheels and other amusement rides and the Nestle Beverage Company. Famous people with ties to the city include pro boxer Ken Norton and folk singer William Fitzsimmons.
