What's the Scoop on Storage Auctions?

by Karen Sorensen, Property Manager Metro Storage, Grayslake, ILPeople are always asking me about storage auctions, especially now with all of the television shows like Storage Wars, Auction Hunters and Storage Hunters. There are storage auction shows on TV every night! I know, my husband watches them all.   Here are the answers to many of your questions about storage unit auctions.   Do you have auctions like that at Metro Storage in Grayslake? Metro Storage schedules auction one day per month.  There is a strict set of rules and guidelines property managers must follow before an auction can take place.   How does a storage auction work? First of all a tenant must be seriously delinquent with rent payments. Every effort is made by the storage consultants to contact the tenant and try to obtain payment.    Each state has rules and requirements that must be adhered to before the contents of a storage unit can be sold. Units are sealed by over locking and tagging so no one can enter it. Tenant access is suspended until payment is made. Letters are mailed, legal announcements are published in the local papers and the auction is scheduled. There are many websites that publish information on upcoming storage auctions. However, they are not always up to date. Remember, the owner of the contents can make their payment right up to auction day.   If the tenant has not paid by the time the auctioneer arrives, the auction will most likely take place. All bidders must register at the office. At the scheduled auction time the auctioneer, storage consultant and bidders promenade to the units for sale. At that time the locks and tag are removed, the door is opened, bidders parade single file to view the contents and the bidding begins. Metro Storageconducts their auctions with a professional auctioneer. If you are wondering if he talks fast like the guy on TV, yes he does.   Are storage auction shows real?   Remember these films are made for entertainment. There are some truths to the shows, such as no one can enter the unit or touch anything. Sales are usually cash only, but some storage companies may still take credit cards. You can find just about anything in a storage locker. People save the strangest things.   Buyers cannot access or remove anything until the end of the auction and payment has been made. ALL items must be removed within a specified amount of time. You cannot just throw the stuff you don’t want in a heap outside the unit like the guys on TV often do.   If you are a storage auction show junkie, be sure to listen to the comments made during the shows. Auctioned storage buyers might find some valuable treasures but more than not, they are hauling a lot of junk to the dump.    If you are interested in attending one of our auctions, give our office a call for more information.   ...read more

How can YOU Benefit from Extra Storage Space?

By Karen Sorensen, Property Manager for Metro Storage in Grayslake, ILStorage solutions are available in many sizes and prices.  You can keep your precious items in a climate controlled indoor unit or you may just need some outside parking for your recreational vehicle.  Metro Self Storagecustomers can be grouped into three basic categories: 1. Short term storage Maybe you are remodeling your kitchen. What do you do with all of your stuff while the contractors are putting in your new floor and cabinets? Renting a storage unit for a month or two helps get all those extra items out of the way. You are selling your home and the realtor suggests that you get rid of some of the clutter to make the rooms look bigger. Store those extra large pieces of furniture at Metro Storage in Grayslake until you are ready to move them into your new home. Store your summer convertible or classic car for the winter months and protect it from the salt and snow until spring. Today’s economy is forcing many people to downsize temporarily. Moving into a smaller residence or living with a family member does not always offer enough room to keep all of your belongings. Since storage rentals at Metro are month to month, you only have to pay for the time you actually need the storage locker. 2.  Long term storage Metro Storage offers discounts to active Military customers to store their belongings during their service. Relocations and deployments make it difficult to take all of your things with you each time you move. Let us keep your items safe while you protect our country. Company relocations may last a few years but you know you will come back home eventually. Keep your items secure for years at Metro Storage in Grayslake. 3. Business storage Many businesses store old records and files to gain office space. Once the year has ended, it is very seldom that you need to reference old files, but you better have them just in case of an IRS audit. We have units suitable for any size business. Small units start at 5x5 and range in sizes up to 15x30. Contractors know the value of purchasing stock in bulk to get better pricing. We have plumbers, electricians and builders renting drive up garages to store their stock. They can access their supply easily with our extended gate hours available 365 days a year.
