In today's economy, I've seen many individuals turning their family car into a taxi to make an extra buck. This is not safe for riders or other cars on the streets, unless they are properly licensed taxi cabs. I'm going to outline a few things to look at the next time you're in a taxi. I want to make clear that I'm talking about taxi's in the State of Illinois, but there are similarities throughout most of the country reguarding this issue. Every taxi in Illinois should have:1. Illinois "Taxi License Plates" example  "00000TX" (with the current year sticker)2. A taxi meter; if you're legit by law- you have one. If the meter is sealed that is even better.3. Illinois State issued Insurance Bond Sticker- The State of Illinois issues a different colored sticker for every   month of the year, the taxi should have a current one, if not, it's NOT INSURED!! Having an insurance paper that states a policy from 1/01/10 to 12/31/10 is NOT good enough. This sticker MUST be viewable in a window of the vehicle at all times.4. Every taxi must have a logo or company name, valid phone numbers, and vehicle number.5. A taxi may or may not have a toplight; that is optional.6. Taxi'sshouldhave their rates displayed inside/outside the vehicle.7.Flat rate taxi's without a meter are not legit.8. Some local municipalities may require city/village licenses, which are separate from the State.9. Any taxi entering/leaving O'Hare or Midway airport must have a MPEA tag displyed in the windshield.10. ALL Chicago taxi cabs must accept credit cards&debit; cards.11. ALL Chicago taxis must sport their "over priced" metal medallions on their hood. Most referenced above may be found in an Illinois vehicle code book. If a taxi driver wants to charge a "flat rate" you should verify it through a dispatcher from that company, or the taxi should have flat rates posted for certain stops. Taxi company websites should post their rates, and airport flat rates. A company that hides their rate information, buyer beware.
