How Important is Thread Count?
Thread count is somewhat important. You will not find good quality sheeting in less than a 200TC. However, a 300TC can be an excellent product and as good or even much better that some of the 1000TC products that are appearing on the market. An equally important factor in quality is the raw materials. The best cottons have long fibers (or staple) which are needed in the creation of soft, durable yarns. Better quality sheeting is made of Egyptian cotton because of these properties. A high thread count cotton woven from an inferior cotton lacks physical integrity and can literally fall apart. A long-staple fiber is the best starting material because it can be spun into a thinner, stronger thread. Note that as thread count increases the individual threads must get skinnier in order to fit into an inch. Thread counts sometimes will increase by double twisting the yarn or by being multi-ply taking a 250TC to a 1000+TC. Many of the luxury vendors (like Anichini) refuse to state their thread counts except to say that they are high. The type of weave (percale, sateen, jacquard, twill) will also influence the texture or feel (hand) of the sheeting.
