So you're thinking about launching a social media campaign. Or perhaps you've had a Facebook page and a Twitter profile for years but you haven't done much with it. As social media has grown over the years, businesses have gone from asking "what is social media" and "why bother" to "how best can I utilize social media for my business brand". This is the right mindset and it's wonderful that you're thinking about it. Be sure to take the time to map your team's strategy before diving in head first.The most common question from small and local business owners is: what are the "rules" of using social media for businesses? The quick answer? There are no rules. That's scary, isn't it. But think of social media like a virtual networking event (I often liken Twitter to Happy Hour, LinkedIn to professional association events, and Facebook to an old fashioned Town Hall). When view in this way, you'll re-frame your thinking. There aren't rules so much as etiquette in the realm of social media. Another common mistake that I encounter in evaluating how businesses are using social media is when companies apply the same rules to every demographic, industry and niche. Some social media platforms are excellent for reaching creative types, others for start-ups or small businesses, and yet others for various industries (like hospitality, manufacturing and education). If you're targeting Millennials you'll want to look at different social networks than you might focus on for reaching Gen Xers. Before you do anything else, the most important thing you can do is to identify your community (peers, competitors, influencers and prospects) online and participate in a helpful manner (sharing not selling, engaging). As you develop your strategy, be sure to take time to participate in the discussions, listen to what's being posted and shared, and reflect on what works in your industry or niche. Social media is really a reflection of real life. Any one thing someone might point to as bad manners, for example, liking your own post, may work for some brands in certain settings. It's all about the tone/voice that you adopt for your brand online. Jimmy Kimmel could post things in a way that Dr. Phil could not. Different audiences, different strategies required. Social media is not rocket science, but it is a nuanced skill that requires thought. Don't try to do everything and be everywhere.
