Predatory Towing Continues in Chicago Still After Several Laws have been Passed. In Chicago we're hearing about towing companies all the time reportedly indulging in illegal towing practices. Among the complaints we've received: All of Which Are Illegal “They make customers pay cash only and refuse to take personal checks or credit cards as required by law.” “They overcharge, which means they charge exorbitant and very high drop fees and release fees, fees that exceed what the local police tow charges.” "They monitor and patrol police and fire dept radios to listen for accident so they can rush to the scene and attempt to lure in a victim." “They tend to tow vehicles to a dark street or to a location other than where the car was picked up and leave them unattended.” “They tow vehicle to locations which are not marked on the state of Illinois required paper work." “ Many times they damage the vehicles they tow since most don't have the proper equipment to tow every vehicle.” “There are reports of thefts from the towed cars.” A simply solution to stop these bandits is as follows. " If you are involved in a accident or a break down and a tow truck show's up out of the blue asking to help. First Make sure it is the COMPANY That You Called out if you did call a towing service. The pirates will tell you whatever you want to hear. The normal lines are as follows. " Oh This tow is going to be paid for by your Insurance company" Not Always True " The City is going to Impound your car" Not True they may move it to a safer location for you unless your car is not legal or your going to JAIL Then they will be impounding your car. " The Body Shop is going to pick up the charges for the towing" Depends on the shop and your Insurance Company" " We will Store your car and tow it to one of our Shops We deal with" " Many will stress to you that there is going to be not charge to you at all " The thought of saving money is a blessing when you involved in a collision" Don't be tempted and fall for these tatics. Your question should be this. Did I call you ? If they say yes then double check the name of the company and the number you called to make sure. Always find out what the price is going to be prior to sighning any paper work or allowing the towing driver to touch you car. Remember Illinois State Law is they have to inform you of the price in writing prior to touching you car. If you feel pressured from a towing operator walk next to the Police they will shy away from them since they know what they are doing is against the law. Don't be afraid to inform the Police on the scene of what the towing companies are trying to get you to do. Contact your Insurance Company and have them arange for you a towing company. Make sure to get the name ad number to the company they tell you are coming out to aid you.
