Major Online Retailer Offsets Customers' Use of Products Retailer partners with TerraPass to purchase carbon credits to offset their customers' use of lighting products. Seattle, WA (PRWEB) July 21, 2009 -- Destination Lighting, a major online lighting and home décor retailer, recently unveiled their latest program to help combat global warming. They have partnered with TerraPass, a leading supplier of carbon credits, to become the only lighting retailer to include between 1-5 years of carbon offsets for nearly all of the lighting fixtures and other energy consuming products they sell through their website.Destination Lighting has already offset more than 34,539 lbs of carbon pollution since the program started on July 10, 2009. Destination Lighting has calculated the national annual average usage of about 90% of their online products. The Annual Carbon Footprint of a product is shown to all website visitors when they view the details of just about any product. "Every item that uses energy created from fossil fuels such as oil or coal to operate produces carbon emissions," explains Doug Drake, Ecommerce Director for Destination Lighting. "We have spent hundreds of hours calculating the estimated carbon emissions emitted by using the products we sell online, not just lighting products." The retailer then purchases an equal amount of carbon credits from TerraPass for between 1 and 5 years of normal usage. "Our goal is to help our customers become just a little more carbon-neutral without sacrificing quality or value." Destination Lighting is one of the first retailers to balance their customer's usage of their products through carbon credits. A few retailers, such as Expedia and Enterprise Rent-A-Car, allow customers to purchase carbon credits as an option with an additional fee; however, Destination Lighting has included this as a standard feature for nearly all of their products at absolutely no cost to the customer. All funds generated through Destination Lighting's purchase of carbon credits will go toward research&development of green energy technologies, including: wind power, farm power, and landfill gas capture.
