About Grinnell, IA
Grinnell is a city in Poweshiek County, Iowa. The population was 9,105 as of the 2000 census. Grinnell was named after Josiah Bushnell Grinnell, who founded the city in 1854. It is the home of Grinnell College. One o fhte biggest companies in Grinnell was Spaulding Manufacturing, founded by H.W. Spaulding in 1876. The company manufactured carriages and spring wagons, and in 1909 they added automobiles to their production line. In 1916 the company shut its doors due to its inability to compete with other manufacturers. It is now being built into a museum, The Spaulding Transportation Museum, and will be a popular tourist attraction. Other popular historical landmarks include Merchant's National Bank, designed by Richard Sullivan, and the Ricker House, designed by Walter Burley Griffin. The two are cited as historical landmarks. Other t han Grinnell College, the biggest schools in the area are Fairview Elementary School and Grinnell High School. Famous persons from Grinnell include Intel co-founder Robert Noyce and actor Gary Cooper.
