About Chariton, IA
Chariton is a city in, as well as the county seat of, Lucas County, Iowa. The Hy-Vee supermarket chain has it's distribution center in the city. Famous people with ties ot the city include NFL player Paul Engebretsen, composer Mortimer Wilson, and anthropologist Gordon Willey. At one time the city was a center for high quality watchmaking. The Hotel Charirone, which was designed by William L. Perkins, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is also listed by the Iowa Historic Preservation Alliance as one of the states most endangered areas. Students here attend the Chariton School District which consists of two elementary schools, one middle school and the Chariton High School.
