SSDI and Ticket to Work Earnings Myths

Like many government assistance programs, the Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) program accumulates a lot of myths. Some of these are grounded in misconceptions while others are just made up and some are just wishful thinking. Everything from eligibility criteria to Ticket to Work in college can be affected; here are a few of the more prominent myths and what reality actually is. Overpayments are No Big Deal In fact, they are and as a recipient, you are responsible for making sure all the data you select to the SSDI program is accurate. If you receive an overpayment, you can be required to pay it back. If you deliberately mislead the SSA with false data, you can be charged criminally and be required to pay the funds back. At the very least, an overpayment will eventually be reconciled and while the aggregate total of what you are entitled to receive will not change, you could see your monthly funds adjusted to pay off what was overpaid. No Need to Report all Employment Some people think if they earn below a certain limit they do not have to report income. This is also false. Recipients should be reporting all income, especially if your monthly earnings change. This is also true if you are on the Ticket to Work program in college and you receive financial aid. In some cases, college financial aid can count against the monthly amount you are entitled to receive. Paying SS Taxes is Reporting No, it is not. While your payment will be recorded by the IRS, you do not know when that data will be submitted to the SSA, which could lead to you being overpaid. SSDI also does not take a notice of payment from the IRS and amends your financial record. A notice simply means the SSA will notify you and ask about your earnings as well as ask you to formally report them. In that overlap period, you could be receiving benefits, you should not be and that could lead to you having to refund some of the funds. SSDI Eligibility will be Negatively Affected by Reporting In some cases, reporting higher income levels can affect your eligibility. Receiving income above certain levels can affect your Ticket to Work Program eligibility, but it also can help you get into tailored programs that let you test getting back in the labor market. The best approach is to always report your income and then work with SSDI employees to figure out the best way to move forward.   Failure to report earnings or overpayments can affect everything from SSDI eligibility to Ticket to Work in college requirements. Reporting promptly and accurately is always the best approach.     ...read more

Poor air Quality in the Home

Research has shown that the quality of indoor air can be worse than that of outdoor air. Many homes are built or remodeled more tightly, without regard to the factors that assure fresh and healthy indoor air. Where do indoor pollutants come from? Here are just a few examples: High levels of nitrogen dioxide and carbon monoxide can result from cooking without a properly vented range hood, especially if the kitchen has a gas range. If your kitchen uses a over-the-counter microwave oven, most likely it only recirculates the air instead of exhausting it outdoors. Household products, such as paints, solvents, air fresheners, aerosol sprays, nail polish, perfumes and bathroom cleaners release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the air. Mold and/or mildew in basements. Mold is everywhere and if the home has high humidity, mold thrives in moist environments. Just breathing takes oxygen and exchanges it for carbon dioxide. Unless the home was built with a special mechanical means of ventilation, homes that are designed and constructed to minimize heat loss may trap more pollutants than older homes. Pollutants can build up in homes to an unhealthy level and the occupants never now it. What can homeowners do to improve the air quality in their homes? Here are a few suggestions to help: Check your kitchen and make sure the range hood exhaust fan is vented outdoors and not just recirculate through a metal screen. Keep the humidity in the home below 50%, especially in basements. Basements need a dehumidifier running in warm months just to maintain humidity below the 50% threshold. Open windows when painting and use low VOC paints. Also, when working on hobbies that need paints, adhesives and other chemicals. Run exhaust fans and/or open windows when using cleaning products, the bathroom or kitchen. Select odor-free or low odor-producing products. Select non-aerosol varieties. Open a window or use an exhaust fan. Follow manufacturers̢۪ directions when using the product and disposing of containers promptly. If your homes has a mechanical ventilation system integrated with the heating & A/C, make sure it runs daily just to exchange air with the outdoors. ...read more
