Hamilton Flowers of Roswell
Grandma’s paper flowers Driving by the narrow streets of historical my attention got caught by an astounding flower arrangement, sitting right on the edge of a side walk. There were three bawls lined up in one row. I pushed a brake against my own will, and stopped my truck right in front of it. I looked behind the bawls and read a sign “Hamilton Flowers”. Intrigued by what I’ve seen outside, I decided to take a minute and step in. The very next moment I stepped in, I was met by a slim, sharp looking young lady with a nice smile. “How may I help you”- she asked with an accent. My first reaction and a question to her was automatic: “Where are you from? , the former , she said. How long have you been living here? – 17 years. What is your name? – . While asking all these questions my eyes were constantly spinning around the store, full of flower arrangement I’ve never seen before. Would you mind if I would ask you some more questions? – I said. Not at all – she replied. Well…- I started slowly. I am always interested how people live in different countries. How was your life like when you were growing up? After a short pause and taking a deep breath she started: There were six of us in my family. We all were so poor and starving often. Both of my parents were working full time, but the government didn’t pay them enough to provide for all of us. Because of that they decided to grow flowers and sell them at the flea market, so that we could have enough food on our table somehow. - So, you have learned from them how to sell flowers? - I asked? “I wish”-she said. One time they brought me to a flea market with a whole bunch of roses and left me there to sell them… …I am still embarrassed what I did with the flowers that day. One by one I gave them away to every person who stopped by. By the end of the day I had zero rubles in my pocket. I never learned how to sell flowers, but I learned real well how to love them. Who taught you that? – I asked before she even finished. - Oh, that’s a whole different story, she replied with a big smile in her face. It all belongs to my grandma. She lost her husband in a World War-2 and was trying to survive by making flowers out of paper and selling them. When I was 8 year old she would put me in a high old chair behind a table, take a piece of paper and start talking to it. Holding it in her hands she would imagine already that this paper is a flower that would bring a person a good mood, joy and happiness. And slowly piece by piece the paper in her hands would turn into a beautiful flower. Flowers could make my grandma cry or smile. She taught me a secret that certain combinations of flowers and their colors could carry a joy or grief if arranged differently. This her secret I am using today for weddings, funerals and many other different occasions. - Well, I am so impressed, but, if you allow, this is my last question, - I said. Could you have such flower store in the back than? - Absolutely not, - she replied getting almost in tears. It was prohibited to have any enterprise for people in a former . If you would start anything like that, you will get into jail right away. - I am so thankful, - she added, - that this country is giving people such an opportunity for that. Here, as you see, my dream is coming a true reality. … Several weeks ago we had our daughter’s wedding and I asked my already friend Irina, to do the entire flower decoration for it. The day of the wedding, the next day after a wedding till now people are still talking about these flowers. By the way, she is changing the bawls in front of her store four times a year, or every new season. So, if you would like to see a new arrangement, stop by her store right before Christmas at :; call 770-641-7877 or go towww.hamiltonflowersroswell.com. Come inside the store. Irina has a lot more stories to tell… ...read more
