For most people, writing is a chore. Whether it is the simple creation of a sales letter or the overwhelming job of writing a business or marketing proposal, so many people evade, avoid, and procrastinate until the last minute. There is a good reason for this evasion. Writing clearly, concisely, and creatively is a talent. We all have our talents and luckily, they are not all the same or life would be boring. Accountants have a talent for numbers; a talent I sorely lack. Artists having a talent for creating beauty with paint, charcoal, or a pencil; another talent I don't possess. Doctors, lawyers, and business owners have their own set of talents. What is critical is to know your talent and utlize it but more crucial is to accept the talent you lack so you can find someone to do it for you. Once you have accepted your own strengths and weaknesses you are ready to become truly successful. If creative and effective writing is not on that list of your assets, hire someone who has that talent. You wouldn't perform brain surgery on yourself or try your own case in court. Why should you write your own press release when you have equally little training? There are quite specific rules about writing a press release and only a professional can turn a one-page press release into a six o'clock news report on your business. The same with a brochure; one wrong word can ruin the total effect you are trying to attain. Writing sales letters can be equally challenging. It is easy to over-sell by utilizing too many factoids and not enough emotion or under-sell by not providing enough information. Writing is my life; it is my passion and my occupation. Don't make yourself crazy by trying to achieve what is simple for others. I don't trust myself with numbers and I happily give that chore to an expert who enjoys facts and figures.
